LONDON, Ont. - The trio of Jenna White, Tianna Deluzio and Amanda Boyle launched the Western Mustangs women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the McMaster Marauders on Wednesday evening at Western's Huron Flats Field.
Â
The Mustangs and the Marauders each came out strong as they tried to settle their previous 0-0 draw from late last month, but it would be the Mustangs who prevailed, extending their undefeated streak to 12 consecutive games.
Â
"It's a good feeling and it's a well deserved win," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "I thought we played a pretty good 90 minutes. I'm not happy about the goal we conceded, but other than that I thought it was a great effort."
Â
With the win the Mustangs improve to 7-0-5 on the season and maintain the top spot in the OUA West standings, while the Marauders record falls to 4-4-5.
Â
The opening half of the contest saw immediate action as Western's Jenna White netted the first goal of the game after the Marauders received a foul in their 18-yard box at the three minute mark. With the 1-0 advantage, the Mustangs continued to apply offensive pressure and were able to control the ball in the Marauders defensive end for the majority of the half.
After another foul for the Marauders, Tianna Deluzio was able to further the Mustangs lead when she headed the second goal of the game at the 23 minute mark. The Marauders were able to regroup and rally back with some strong offensive pressure late in the half, allowing McMaster's Jessie Faber to cut the Mustangs lead to 2-1 at the break.
Â
The second half continued to see the Mustangs offence pressure the Marauders deep in their end for a large portion of the contest. Western's Amanda Boyle was able to secure a 3-1 lead for the Mustangs when she fired off a stellar shot on Marauder's goaltender Brittany Duffie, hitting the back of the net for the third Mustangs goal of the match. As the game clock ran down to zero the Mustangs walked away with a 3-1 victory and extended the team's unbeaten streak to 12 straight games.
Â
"We've got four big games left - three of them are at home and we have to get ready for two tough games coming up this weekend," said Painter. "We are in a very good situation and we are very happy about where we are."
Â
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday, October 12, as they face-off against the Brock Badgers at 1:00 p.m. at Western's Huron Flats Field.
