LONDON, Ont. – Four of Western's five starters scored in double digits as the Mustangs women's basketball team defeated the York Lions 77-49 in Western's annual Shoot for the Cure game on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
Â
CIS women's basketball programs from around the country join together each season to help raise money for breast cancer research as part of the Shoot for the Cure campaign. The initiative has proven an overwhelming success since it was launched in the fall of 2007 with over $600,000 in donations. Last season, for the second year in a row, all CIS women's basketball schools participated in the program.
Â
Sunday's win was the third consecutive victory for the Mustangs and moves the team into a tie for first place in the OUA West with a 3-1 record while York drops to 1-3 on the year.
Â
Jenny Vaughan led the Mustangs offence once again with 18 points, while grabbing eight rebounds and contributing six assists. Fellow guard
Kelsey Wright recorded 15 points while
Melissa Rondinelli and
Katelyn Leddy scored 14 and 10 points respectively. Rondinelli and Leddy were also a force on the boards, hauling in seven and eight rebounds each.
Â
Courtney Osborne, 11 points, and Llyandra Kerr, 10 points, led York's scoring efforts.
Â
It was a tale of two halves on Sunday as Western started out strong in the opening quarter taking a 25-16 lead before York outscored Western in the second to cut the Mustangs lead to 36-32 at halftime.
Â
After a fairly even first half the Mustangs took control in the second, taking advantage of York's 18% shooting by nailing 45% of their own field goal attempts to outscore the Lions 41-17 over the final 20 minutes to take a 77-49 victory.
Â
Next up for the Mustangs is a road trip down the 401 to Toronto as they face the Varsity Blues on Friday night before taking on Ryerson on Saturday.
