The Mustangs wrestling team was busy this past weekend, with members of the team competing at the New York International (NYI) tournament in New York City, NY and the Greater Toronto Open (GTO) in Ajax, ON. The New York International was a two-day tournament held on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9, with the Greater Toronto Open being held on November 9 only.
At the GTO, the women's Mustangs wrestlers finished in third overall, with silver and bronze medals being awarded to several members of the men's and women's individual performances. While the Mustangs did not medal in New York, Brianne Barry finished in fourth in the women's 55 kg category where the team faced good international competition to start out their season.
Head coach Ray Takahashi accompanied the team members to New York City, while coach Scott Proctor lead the Mustangs in Ajax. The Mustangs fared well at the New York Invitational despite not taking home any medals.
Brianne Barry was the top Mustangs finisher in New York, placing fourth in the women's 55 kg category.
Steven Takahashi, competing in the men's 55kg division, also had a good tournament, despite losing a close semi-final, consolation round match. Each wrestler finished the meet with a 2-2 individual record, with Takahashi losing one of his rounds to the eventual silver medalist Omak Syuryun of Russia.
Riley Otto in the men's 96 kg category narrowly lost a close 9-9 decision while winning another one of his matches 8-0.
In Ajax, the women's wrestling team came home with a bronze medal in team competition with several student-athletes on both the men's and women's side taking silver and bronze individual medals.
Emma Tedball (82 kg),
Ameed Lakhani (54 kg),
Caleb Rutner (72 kg) and
Arllene Williams (67 kg) all received silver medals, while
Brenna Llewellyn (59 kg) and
Kristen Bolivar (48 kg) won bronze medals.
Jamie Golob (72 kg) and
Kyle Bonk (90 kg) finished fourth, with
Max Doucet (90 kg) and
Chris Kongas (76 kg) finishing fifth, and
Campbell Langlois (72 kg) finishing sixth.
The Mustangs wrestling team is back in action this weekend as members of the women's team will be competing in the Harry Geris Memorial Duels at home on Saturday, Nov. 16, while members of the men's team will be in Toronto participating in the University of Toronto Open, also being held on Saturday, Nov. 16.
