Thunderwolves comeback downs Mustangs in five sets

Box Score THUNDER BAY, Ont. – After defeating the Lakehead Thunderwolves in straight sets on Friday night the Western Mustangs women's volleyball team returned to the court to face the Thunderwolves for the second straight night at Lakehead's C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse. This time it would be the host team coming out on top as the Mustangs fell to the Thunderwolves in five sets (27-25, 25-21, 12-25, 21-25, 7-15).

Similar to Friday night's contest the Mustangs came out of the gate strong, winning the first two sets 27-25 and 25-21. Despite falling behind 2-0 the Thunderwolves were unfazed, taking the third set 25-12, thanks in part to a 43% kill percentage, compared to a 10% mark for the Mustangs. The intensity picked up in the fourth set with Western making 42 attacks in the frame, however Lakehead withstood the Mustangs efforts and converted 40% of their kill attempts to claim a 25-21 set victory. In the fifth and deciding set the host squad got out to an early 5-1 lead and didn't look back, taking a 15-7 set win to claim the match 3-2.

Senior starter Stephanie Kreuter led the Mustangs with 14 kills and 4 digs and was closely followed by Kat Tsiofas who added 11 kills and 5 digs for the Western squad. Candice Scott also impressed with 10 kills on the night.

Jen Casey led the Thunderwolves in the win tallying 19 kills, a service ace, and 6 digs for Lakehead.

The Western Mustang's women's team return to play after the holiday break, traveling to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders on Friday, January 10, at 6:00 p.m.
