Members of the Western Mustangs wrestling team competed between two tournaments that took place over the course of the weekend. The first of the two tournaments was the Henri Deglane International, held in Nice, France on Friday, November 29, while the second tournament, the York Open, took place in Toronto, Ontario on Saturday, November 30. After competing in the Ontario Senior Open last weekend the Mustangs sent a limited squad into action this weekend, giving team members time away from the mat to rest and recover.
At the Henri Deglane International, two members of the Mustangs wrestling team,
Steven Takahashi (55 kg) and
Riley Otto (84 kg), represented Canada's U24 National Team at the meet. Takahashi lost a close opening match to Chakir Ansari of France, falling 8-11 in the match, and was subsequently eliminated. Ansari would go on to finish third in the tournament. Otto finished the meet in fifth place in his weight category. The international meet was a successful test for Otto at 84 kg, a weight class in which he does not normally compete. Currently, Otto is between weight classes and had previously been competing at the men's 96 kg weight category.Â
Closer to home, several other Mustangs travelled to Toronto on Saturday to compete in the York Open. Two members of the team took home individual medals:
Brenna Llewellyn claimed silver in the women's 59 kg category and first-year student-athlete
Chad Bain took bronze in the men's 130 kg event.
Nick Xiang and
Sam Hanna both placed fifth, at 61 kg and 82 kg respectively. Xiang, a first year student at Ivey, was competing in his opening tournament of the year, going 2-2 on the day.
The wrestling team will get some much needed rest from the over the next several weeks as classes end and exams begin. The Mustangs return back to action in the new year, competing in the Brock Open on Saturday, January 11, 2014.Â
