Mustangs Open Season with Three Gold Medals, Second-Place Finish at McMaster Invitational

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs opened the 2026-27 season with a strong performance at the McMaster Invitational on Sunday, capturing three individual titles and eight total medals on their way to a second-place finish in the combined team standings. The Mustangs men placed second overall, while the women's team earned a third-place finish.

For head coach Scott Proctor, the opening tournament provided plenty of positives while also offering a clear picture of where the team can continue to improve as the season progresses.

"It was a good start to the season," said Proctor. "There were a lot of positives from our group, but as with any first tournament, there are areas we need to keep improving."

One of the day's biggest storylines was the return of Treye Trotman, who was competing in his first OUA competition since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery in June 2025. Trotman looked every bit the wrestler who has established himself among the conference's elite, posting a perfect 4-0 record and winning all four matches by technical superiority. He outscored his opponents 45-5 en route to a gold medal performance.

Proctor was especially pleased with Trotman's return to competition, noting that the result reflected the work put in throughout a lengthy rehabilitation process. "To come back from a significant injury and compete the way he did speaks to the work he has put in over the past year," said Proctor.

On the Women's side, Jennifer Nwamadi turned in one of the most dominant performances of the tournament, recording three victories by technical superiority and one by pin. She outscored her opponents 31-0 and did not surrender a single point all day.

Myah Kyle joined Nwamadi atop the podium, earning gold after winning three matches. Two victories came by technical superiority before she secured her third win by pin.

According to Proctor, both athletes set an important standard for the team. "Jennifer and Myah wrestled with a lot of confidence and discipline," he said. "They set a strong tone for our team and showed the standard we're striving for."

Western's depth was equally evident throughout the tournament. Ryan Dahcha earned a silver medal, while Cyenna Trotman, Lucas Mella, Osato Edokpayi and Sukhmeet Randhawa each claimed bronze, bringing the Mustangs' medal total to eight.

The strong opening-day performance provides momentum as Western begins its OUA campaign and builds toward the championship portion of the season. While encouraged by the results, Proctor emphasized that the focus remains on long-term development.

"The results were encouraging, but this is only the beginning," he said. "We'll take what we learned, get back to work in the room, and focus on continuing to improve each week."

The Mustangs return to action on Nov. 8 at the TMU Open.
