Day Four Recap
KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The Western Mustangs women’s curling team had a strong final day of round robin competition at the CIS/CCA Curling Championships that saw the team pick up their first win of the tournament as well as receive a number of post-season awards.
Lead
Stephanie Thompson was recognized for her strong play as she was named a CIS Second Team All-Canadian while vice Jackie Rivington received the Sportsmanship Award. Head coach Rory Munro was also honoured, receiving the women’s Coach of the Year Award.
On the ice the Mustangs faced off with the host Thompson Rivers Wolfpack in the final round robin draw of the championship. Entering the game at 2-4 the Wolfpack opened up by scoring two points in the first end before the Mustangs fired back with two points of their own in the second. Neither team was able to establish a significant lead sending the game to the 10th end tied at six. Western finished strong scoring a single point in the final frame to earn a 7-6 victory and finish the championship with a 1-6 record.
Day Three Recap
KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Western’s women’s curling team was back in action on Friday at the Kamloops Curling Club for day three of the CIS/CCA Curling Championships.
The Mustangs started out with an early morning game against the McMaster Marauders in draw five. The match started out as a back and forth contest with the two teams trading points throughout the first five sets. Entering the sixth end down 3-2 Western scored a one point in the end to tie things up, however the Marauders picked up four points in the seventh, ending the game with McMaster picking up the 7-3 win.
Western’s second matchup of the day came against the undefeated Alberta Pandas who entered draw six with a 5-0 record. The purple and white started out fast, scoring two points in the second end and one in the third to take an early 3-0 lead. Western eventually built up a 5-2 lead entering the seventh end before Alberta scored one point in the seventh and then four in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead. Undaunted the Mustangs struck back in the ninth end scoring two points to tie the game at 7-7 entering the 10th frame, however the Pandas managed to pick up one final point in the 10th to keep their perfect record intact.
The final day of round robin competition takes place on Saturday as the Mustangs take on the host Thompson Rivers Wolf Pack at noon Eastern (9:00 a.m. Pacific).
Day Two Recap
KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The CIS/CCA Curling Championships continued on Thursday evening in British Columbia as the Mustangs took to the ice for two round robin contests on the second day of competition.
In their first game of the day the Mustangs squared off with the UPEI Panthers who entered the day at 0-2 after losses to Alberta and host Thompson Rivers. After trading points in the first two ends the Panthers jumped out in front scoring four in the third end and three points in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead. The Mustangs struck back in the fifth end scoring two, however the two teams continued to trade points for the remainder of the game, with UPEI taking an 11-6 victory in nine ends.
Western returned to the ice later in the evening to face the undefeated Manitoba Bisons. The Bisons opened the scoring in the first end earning two points and did the same in the third to hold a 4-1 lead after three ends. The two teams would alternate scoring ends throughout the game with Western picking up single points in the fourth and sixth ends, and two more in the eighth, however Manitoba was able to keep their undefeated record intact, picking up the 9-5 victory in eight ends.
Western is back in action for two more round robin games on Friday, taking on the McMaster Marauders at 12:00 p.m. Eastern (9:00 a.m. Pacific) and the Alberta Pandas at 5:00 p.m. Eastern (2:00 p.m. Pacific) .
Day One Recap
KAMLOOPS, B.C. - The Western Mustangs women’s curling kicked off day one of the 2013 CIS/CCA Curling Championships on Wednesday afternoon at the Kamloops Curling Club in British Columbia.
Western’s squad began the competition with a back and forth game against the Saint Mary’s Huskies. The Mustangs were off to a shaky start with Saint Mary’s taking an early lead, but bounced back to surpass their opponent and lead 8-7 after eight ends. Unfortunately for Western the Huskies scored three points over the final two ends to defeat the Mustangs by a 10-8 score.
The second match-up of the day saw the Mustangs in a difficult contest against the Guelph Gryphons.
Nicole Westlund led the Mustangs curling at 86 percent in the 9-4 loss to the Gryphons in eight ends. Westlund’s strong performance followed on the heels of her making 96 percent of her shots in the opener against Saint Mary’s.
The Mustangs are back in action on Thursday, first taking on the UPEI Panthers, who lost both their games in day one of the competition, followed by a game against the Manitoba Bisons who are currently tied with Alberta for first.
The Mustangs play UPEI today at 5 :00 p.m. Eastern time (2:00 p.m. Pacific) and Manitoba at 10:00 p.m. Eastern (7:00 p.m. Pacific).
