MONTREAL, Quebec. — This weekend the Mustangs badminton team was in Montreal competing in the Canadian University-College National Championships.
On the first day of the competition, in the team event, the Mustangs defeated the Université de Sherbrooke and the Ryerson Rams to qualify for the national semifinal. However, in the semifinals the Mustangs lost against a competitive team from Université de Montréal.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs battled for the bronze medal against The University of Toronto and managed to come out on top, defeating the fellow Ontario team 3-1 to earn third place.
In the individual event, the Mustangs also faired well, coming out with several medals.
In the men’s single event, OUA champion and MVP Martin Giuffre defeated Philippe Gaumond from host team, the Université du Québec à Montréal by a score of 12-21, 21-16, 21-10 to win the gold medal.
The Mustangs also medalled in the women’s double event. In the bronze medal match, Alex Bruce and Adrianna Giuffre defeated the team from the Université de Montréal by score of 21-12, 21-14.
In the men’s double event, the pair of Giuffre and Ross Golding lost in the bronze medal match, finishing the tournament in fourth place.
And finally, the Mustangs earned another gold medal in the mixed doubles event with the paring of Bruce and Martin Giuffre coming out victorious against the team of Michelle Li and Andrew Lau from U of T, defeating them 22-20, 21-14.
