The two time defending National champs opened the 2013 season on the right foot with two victories over Waterloo on Sept 8. In game 1, they scored 4 in the first inning and 5 in the second before cruising to a 13-0 win. It was the Mustangs' 100th consecutive regular season win. Western recorded 13 hits to just 3 for Waterloo. Brittany Hicks (Dundas, ON) picked up 3 hits and 5 RBI to lead the Mustangs. Stacie Cox (London, ON) added two hits as well as 2 RBI and recorded the win in the circle while Tara Cress (Brampton, ON), AJ Anstett (Cargill, ON), and Michelle Reynolds (Guelph, ON) added 2 hits apiece. Freshman, Mac Hawkins (Whitby, ON) pitched two innings of shut out relief.
In game 2, Western broke open a 0-0 game in the third inning with 5 runs and went on to win 13-3. Melanie Smith (Kitchener, ON) and Kara Stirling (London, ON) each got 3 hits, Jenn Wakefield (St Thomas, ON) recorded 3 RBI including a HR, and Anstett had 2 triples. In total, the Mustangs had 13 hits. Stirling struck out 9 in the run rule win. Waterloo's runs were unearned.
Next action for the Mustangs will be in Ottawa vs Carleton on Saturday and on Sunday vs Ottawa.Â
