Scholtes scores 1,000th career point as Mustangs defeat Lakehead

Box Score THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Three Mustangs scored in the double digits, including Peter Scholtes who notched his 1,000th career point, as the Western Mustangs men's basketball team defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 73-47 on Saturday night at the CJ Sanders Fieldhouse.

The win was Western's fourth straight victory and boosted the Mustangs record to 6-8, placing them into a tie with Laurier for third place in the OUA West Division.

After a great performance, Quinn Henderson led all scorers with 21 points followed by Scholtes and George Johnson with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Scholtes surpassed a milestone shortly past the midway point of the opening quarter, hitting a jump shot with 3:52 remaining in the frame to record his 1,000th point in a Mustangs uniform. The London native dominated the opening ten minutes, scoring 11 of the Mustangs 24 points, and would finish the night with 1,009 points for his career.

The Mustangs dominated the Thunderwolves early in the game coming out shooting 51% in the first half compared to a 36% shot percentage for the host squad. After being outscored 24-7 in the first quarter the Thunderwolves battled back in the second, holding a slight 19-18 scoring edge, however it was not enough to overcome the deficit established in the first quarter and the game went into the break with Western leading 42-26.

Western's raid continued into the second half outscoring Lakehead in both quarters 17-12 and 14-9. Defence played a significant role in their performance as the Mustangs were able to score 16 points off turnovers while holding Lakehead to only 34% from the floor. Most importantly, Lakehead was only able to get to the free throw line on four occasions, missing all four shots, causing them to rely almost entirely on shots from the field, converting 14 of 36 attempts. Although the Mustangs only earned four free throws of their own, sinking three, Western was able to go 18-37 from the floor and close out the game with a 73-47 victory.

The Mustangs will take a few nights off until returning to the court on Wednesday, January 22, as they host the Windsor Lancers at Alumni Hall. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. and fans from across the world can watch live on Mustangs TV.
