Ryerson defeats Western in four sets

Box Score TORONTO, Ont.- The Western Mustangs women's volleyball team made their way to Toronto to start off their weekend double header against Ryerson and the University of Toronto but didn't get the start they wanted on Saturday, falling to the Rams in four sets by scores of 20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 14-25.

Western's strong offence totalled 17 kills during the first set but technical errors turned out to be their downfall, as the Mustangs found themselves unable to keep up with their host. Capitalizing on Western's miscues, the Rams were able to take the early lead in the match, winning the first set by a score of 20-25.

The second set started out looking like it would be more of the same, with Ryerson taking the early lead again, but after a kill from the Mustangs Serena Smith equalized the score the Mustangs appeared to gain new energies. Following that turning point, the two teams went point for point until Western was able to steal the lead for good and take the set 25-22.

The third set was just as close with the teams staying neck in neck most of the way. In the end, however, Ryerson was able to capitalize on the Mustangs' technical errors and take the set 22-25, grabbing a commanding 2-1 lead in the match heading into the fourth set.

The Mustangs looked like they might fight back in the fourth, taking an 3-point lead in the early going, but Ryerson was able to find their footing soon after. The Rams were able to catch up before going ahead for good to take the set 14-25 and the match 1-3.

More than one Mustangs player turned in an impressive effort on the afternoon, with Serena Smith tallying 15 kills for the offense and Steph Kreuter adding 14 digs for the defense. Kreuter's performance gives her a team-leading 135 digs on the season, as the fourth-year Kinesiology student continues to be a strong presence on the Mustangs squad in 2013-14.

On Ryerson's side, the offense was led by Veronica Livingston, who registered 16 kills, while the defense was led by Julia Longman with 14 digs. Livingston has been great for the Rams all season, and heading into Saturday's matchup she was leading the team in average points-per-set at 3.80.

The purple and white continue their regular season weekend on Sunday, January 26 at 2:00 p.m., when they take to the court in Toronto against the Varsity Blues.
