Box Score GUELPH, Ont. – The Western Mustangs women's basketball team kept the good times rolling on Wednesday night, ringing in the new year with a big 78-69 over the Guelph Gryphons.
The victory – the team's tenth-straight in regular season play – was spurred on by fifth-year veteran guard
Jenny Vaughan, a steady if-not-spectacular presence on the offensive end; the captain scored a game-high 36 points on 11-for-20 shooting, while connecting on all 11 of her free-throw attempts.
Guelph forward Katherine MacTavish lead her team with 26 points while adding a game-high 11 rebounds but found her otherwise-excellent outing eclipsed by a superior effort by one of the hottest teams in all of Canadian collegiate basketball.
The final score disguises how close this contest was in the boxscore: Western had a slim advantage in shooting accuracy, but Guelph took 72 shots to the Mustangs' 63; Western gave up 18 turnovers to Guelph's 16, but Guelph would trail in rebounds, 33 to 37.
Finally separating the teams would be Western's miraculous ability to get to the charity stripe; the Purple and White connected on all but one of their 23 free-throw attempts as a team, an impressive rate 95.7% outshooting the Gryphons who converted 68.8% of their 16 attempts.
With Vaughan accounting for much of her team's production on offence, her veteran running-mates kept the defense honest by threatening dependable post-options in
Melissa Rondinelli and
Katelyn Leddy. The gritty frontcourt duo would combine for 24 points and 17 rebounds while anchoring the team on the defensive end.
Coach
Brian Cheng's Mustangs will look for their 11th straight win on the road against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Waterloo.
