The Western Mustangs softball team ended the regular season on a high note this past weekend after going 5-0 with 70 runs scored and two against. With the latest victories, the Mustangs close out the season with a perfect 21-0 record with 236 runs scored and only 17 runs against.
The Mustangs opened up their weekend with a pair of home games at Stronach Park where they hosted the Waterloo Warriors. Game one saw the purple and white claim a 12-0 victory after outhitting the Warriors 17-1, with home runs by
Melanie Smith,
Shannon Davidson, and
Jenn Wakefield. Smith, Davidson, and Wakefield had four, three, and three RBI, respectively.
Tricia MacKay contributed a triple in the team's victory along with doubles by both
Brittany Hicks and Davidson. Rookie
Robyn Wood scored three times for the Mustangs, while
Riley Cunningham and
Dana Lahti each scored twice. In the circle, pitcher
Stacie Cox allowed just one hit, picking up her eighth win of 2014 against no losses.
In game two against the Warriors, Davidson led the Mustangs at the plate going three for four (single, triple, and HR) with four RBI in the team's 9-1 victory.
Michelle Reynolds was three for three, scoring twice, and Rachelle Washkevich added two RBI. Freshman
Rachael Jacques got the win in the circle allowing just two hits and no earned runs.
On Saturday, Western traveled to Toronto to face the York Lions and came away with 17-0 and 15-0 victories. In game one freshman
Jayme Wells earn five RBI on three hits, with Lahti and
Emma Parno each recording three RBI and scoring three times.
Sam McMahon added a triple and scored three times, while both Wakefield and
Tara Cress had two RBI. Jacques pitched a no-hitter to improve her record to 8-0 with an impressive 0.875 season ERA. In game two against the Lions, rookie
Amber Smolenaars was the star both offensively and defensively after recording two doubles and five RBI while picking up six K and allowing only three hits in the circle. Both Smith and Washkevich scored four times, while Hicks had three RBI and scored twice for the Mustangs.
Sunday saw the Mustangs head to Kingston to face off against Queen's in their final matches of the season. Due to a rainout only one game was played, in which Western came away with a 17-1 win. Smolenaars recorded her fifth win of the season and lowered her season ERA to 1.615. The Mustangs continued their dominant offence with 22 hits including home runs by Hicks and Wakefield, and triples by Smith (2), Lahti, and MacKay. Cunningham, Wakefield, Hicks, and MacKay each had three hits for the Mustangs.
Next up the Mustangs will look to defend their title at the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association (CCSA) National Championships, which will be held from October 11-13 in Calgary. The Mustangs kick off round robin action with a pair of matches against the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and the University of Regina on October 11, followed by a match against Humber College on October 12.
