The Western Mustangs (0-2) travel to Toronto this week in search of their first win after dropping their first two games of the season at home to Windsor and Guelph.
Leadership on the team has come in large part from
Mackenzie Puklicz, who leads the Mustangs in scoring with 24 points and has picked up nine rebounds in her first two games.Â
And while heading up plays, Caroline Wolynski has also accumulated 18 points, 12 of them coming in the November 7 game against Guelph.
Of the rookies, guard Maddy Horst has seen her fair share of playing time, averaging 30.5 minutes per game and scoring 8 points in her debut against Windsor. Another first-year Mustang, forward Alex Van Heeswyk, had her first double digit OUA game November 7 against Guelph which saw her shoot perfect from the field and go 4-5 in free throws. The first road trip of the season will be another test for the many rookies on the team who are getting a feel for playing at the OUA level.
"When you get to the CIS or OUA level, it really is sink or swim," said head coach Brian Cheng. "Sometimes we see ourselves swimming and other times we're trying to keep our head above water."
The Mustangs will need to control the rate of turnovers early in the game, being mindful of travelling and shot clock violations. Western has struggled against the defensive press, but has started to push back in the middle court, as seen in the comeback attempt against Guelph on November 7.
