SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont - By the third quarter, the Mustangs women's basketball team had already scored one more point than the night before. They would tack on 21 more to defeat the Algoma Thunderbirds 76-43 at the Sault College Athletics Centre in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday night.
The win puts the Mustangs at 2-4 on the season to remain in third place in the OUA West while Algoma, winless on the season at 0-5, stays in last.Â
The lead came early and fast for the Mustangs, who were able to snag defensive rebounds and hurry the ball back to the other end of the court. Dominant offensive plays led by
Meredith McLeod and
Mackenzie Puklicz helped the Mustangs amass a 20-6 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Â
There was no break in momentum as Puklicz fired off a quick three-pointer to start the second quarter. Algoma's misfortune at the basket converted into successful scoring runs for the Mustangs. Western went on a 10-2 run to end the second quarter leading 37-15.
Â
While the Mustangs have had troubles with their three-point game during the season, it didn't seem to be the case tonight. McLeod's shot from the outside line not only put them up 55-28, but helped exceed the team's 54 point outing from the night before with 40 seconds left to play in the third quarter.
Â
Despite the quick pace of play, the team worked tightly as a unit to set up plays along the perimeter. When defensive pressure was too much for the Mustangs to move the ball around, Wolynski would take matters into her own hands to clear lanes and get up to the basket. The 5'9" guard was quick on her feet to move around the defense, literally spinning around any Thunderbird in her way to layup to the basket and draw fouls.
Â
Algoma's offense came to life in the fourth quarter, as they put up 15 points. But fancy footwork and dominance both in scoring and defense by the purple and white put this one away, as Western walked away with a 76-43 victory.Â

The Mustangs return home next week to host McMaster on Wednesday, November 26 at Alumni Hall. The tip off is at 6:00 p.m., and you can watch live on OUA.tv.
