Caroline Wolynski vs. CBU

Women's Basketball By Andrew Potter

Mustangs rebound against Brock with 54-41 win

Box Score ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – With their fourth victory in five games, the Western Mustangs continue to gain steam as they race towards the playoffs after a 54-41 win against the Brock Badgers.

Veteran guard Jenny Vaughan scored a game-high 20 points and added six rebounds for the Purple and White, leading her team to their 15th victory of the season.

Needing little offensive firepower in the low-scoring affair, Vaughan was flanked by veteran forward Katelyn Leddy, who had a monster outing on the boards, leading the game with 15 rebounds. In fact, the entire starting unit hit the glass hard; the Mustangs' backcourt of Vaughan, Kelsey Wright and Caroline Wolynski combined for 14 rebounds while Leddy's frontcourt partner Melissa Rondinelli bounced back with six rebounds of her own.

Wright and Wolynski would spend much of the game spacing the floor with the constant threat of their long-range shooting accuracy, each finishing with four assists and a three-pointer; on the other end of the floor, the duo sealed the perimeter, daring the Badgers' to force their jump-shots.

The Badgers were led by nine points apiece from forwards Andrea Polischuk and Nicole Rosenkranz, the latter also leading her team with 10 rebounds, nearly missing out on the double-double.

The Mustangs seemed to have the Badgers' number from the opening tip-off; the veteran squad ensured no easy looks for Brock, never allowing their opponents to find their rhythm despite the Badgers' home-court advantage. Western allowed a combined 14 points in the first two quarters of action, denying any opportunity for a Brock upset.

While the Mustangs played very loose with the ball, leading to 21 turnovers in the game, the defence did its part by holding the Badgers to only 23.6% from the field, including 23 missed attempts from three-point territory.

The Mustangs' regular season concludes with a matinee match-up versus the playoff-bound Laurier Goldenhawks at Alumni Hall. With both teams tied up with a 15-6 record, the game will decide which team finishes in second place to earn a bye in round one of the OUA playoffs. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in London, Ontario.
