The Western Mustangs women's basketball team has proven themselves to be a top OUA competitor this season, going 14-6 and currently holding third place in the OUA West Division standings. This week the Mustangs are hoping to clinch two games and four points as they are set to battle the Brock Badgers on Wednesday and the second-place Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday. This week marks the team's last two games of the regular season and will be critical for playoff seeding as the Mustangs try and surpass the Golden Hawks and steal the second seed. The Mustangs will be entering the matchups after a 71-58 loss to the CIS No. 1 Windsor Lancers last week and will be looking to end the season with momentum as they prepare for playoff action.
Jenny Vaughn continues to dominate the CIS and OUA scoring charts, placing first overall in the OUA with a 23.2 points-per-game average and second in the CIS – just .3 points out of first. Providing help are
Melissa Rondinelli and
Katelyn Leddy, who have both averaged 11 points-per-game for Western.Â
Under the leadership of Vaughan, the Mustangs will be looking for a full-team effort heading into this week's contests to secure crucial playoff positioning.
Western vs. Brock - Wednesday, February 12 at 6 PM
The Brock Badgers are tied for fourth in the West standings with an 11-9 record to sit one spot behind the Mustangs, but pose no threat to Western's chance at a playoff spot as they sit six
points behind the purple and white with only two games left. The Badgers will be able to potentially hinder the Mustangs quest for the second seed, however, as a Brock win in Wednesday's matchup could keep the Western squad in third. The Badgers are led by Elizabeth Roach, who is shooting 41% from the field and averaging 18 points a game.
Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday in St. Catharines.
Western vs. Laurier - Saturday, February 15 at 1 PMÂ Watch live on Mustangs TV
The Laurier Golden Hawks have had a fantastic season this year, going 15-5 to hold the second spot in the OUA West standings. Just one place and two points above the Mustangs, Saturday's contest marks the last regular season game of the year and will also determine who takes the higher seed heading into playoffs. Laurier has an impressive 6-2 away-game record, which may be worrisome for the purple and white as the Golden Hawks head to Alumni Hall on Saturday afternoon, but with an 8-1 record at home the Mustangs are more than prepared to win in their own house.
The last time the two teams met was in Waterloo in mid-January when Laurier recorded a tight 74-73 win over the Mustangs, and the purple and white will be looking to avenge that one-point loss this weekend in what could be one of the biggest games of the year.
Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall on Saturday.Â
