Western wins OUA Women's Wrestling Championship

TORONTO - For the first time in seven years the Western Mustangs are the OUA Women's Wrestling Champions after dethroning the six-time defending champion Brock Badgers earlier today at the OUA Wrestling Championships at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

In the women's competition, Western had three wrestlers win individual gold medals, one less than the Badgers, but edged the defending champions by two points with more second-place finishes (three to two) as well as a fourth-place result.

Western's Brianne Barry earned the OUA's most outstanding wrestler award after winning the gold medal in the 55kg class. She was a perfect 2-0 in the round robin and followed that up with a 4-0 victory in the final over Karleah Bonk from the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

Also winning individual titles for the Mustangs were Anna McKee in the 59kg class and Larissa D'Alleva in the 63kg division. McKee was named the OUA's rookie of the year following her victory, and head coach Ray #Takahashi# earned the coach of the year award.

Joining Western's gold medal winners on the podium were silver medal winners Madi Parks (48kg class), Valerie Ouellette (51kg class), Christine Schmidt (72kg class), while #Arlene Williams (67kg class) finished just out of the medals in fourth.

On the men's side of the event Western just missed out on third place totaling 50 points, only two back of the McMaster Marauders. Brock claimed the men's silver medal while the Guelph Gryphons took gold.

Western wrestlers earned five medals on the day, with Kevin Ens (120kg class), Riley Otto (90kg class), and Alec Bauer (76kg class) earning silver while Josh Proctor (72kg class) and Caleb Rutner (68kg class) won bronze. Finishing just off the podium was Ameed Lakhani (54kg class) who claimed a fourth place finish.

The Mustangs now get set for the CIS Wrestling Championships, being hosted from February 28 – March 1 by the UNB Varsity Reds in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
