Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. – The 2013-2014 season has ended for Western's men's basketball team as the Mustangs fell to the McMaster Marauders 83-49 on Saturday afternoon in their OUA West Semi-Final elimination matchup.
Top scorers for the Mustang were
Peter Scholtes, Gregory Morrow, and
George Johnson, scoring 16, 7, and 6 points, respectively.
For McMaster, Taylor Black stood out with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds, while teammates Aaron Redpath and Leon Alexander were close behind with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The Mustangs played catch up for the majority of the first quarter only to find their first lead with 23 seconds left, when Eric McDonald helped put the score at 18-15. McMaster's Taylor Black was on his game right from the beginning, scoring 8 points and putting together a string of three consecutive baskets.
In the second quarter, the Mustangs started off with a layup from
Anthony Spiridis, pushing their lead to five points- their largest of the game. However, it all began to turn around for McMaster at three-minute mark, when rookie Leon Alexander would find confidence in his jump shot in time to hit three consecutive baskets, the last of which would result in two points plus a foul. McMaster was back on top by the end of quarter 31-24.
With 20 minutes gone, the second half of the game belonged to the Marauders as they controlled the floor, going on large runs and ultimately shutting down the Mustangs offence. McMaster began the third quarter with a 12-2 run that included Aaron Redpath hitting two consecutive threes. The second run took place just a minute after with the Marauders outscoring the Mustangs 14-2 and completely dismantling any offensive strategies head coach Brad Campbell had in store.
Shooting 63% to start the fourth quarter, McMaster was up by 27 points and was not ready to quiet down the pace of the game, only allowing western to score 12 points. McMaster dug too much of hole for the Mustangs offence early on in the game for any sort of comeback to take place, so with the sound of the buzzer McMaster took the game 83-49 and will now advance to the OUA's West Finals.
While Western will not advance this year, the team has much to look forward to looking ahead to future seasons. With 12 players finishing their third eligibility year or less, including five who were in their first and five more who in their second, Western has a ton of room to grow and, after registering six of their eight wins in their strong second half, will look to carry their momentum into next year.
