Mustangs battle for a playoff spot this weekend against Guelph and Waterloo

The Western Mustangs women's volleyball team will have an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot this weekend as they head into a pair of road games against the Waterloo Warriors on Friday and the top-ranked Guelph Gryphons on Saturday. After upsetting the then CIS No. 9 York Lions in a five-set battle and sweeping the Nipissing Lakers three straight last weekend the Mustangs holds on to a chance at a playoff position as they head into their final two games of the regular season against Waterloo and Guelph. Now 5-12 on the season the Western squad is tied for fifth with Waterloo in the OUA West Division standings.

Senior right-side Stephanie Kreuter continues to lead the team as she recorded 14 points in Saturday evening's victory over a top-ranked York squad while second-year left-side Kenzie Macdonald had one of her best games of the season, recording a team-high of 19 points on the day and leading the Mustangs in the back court with 16 digs. Sunday's game against the Lakers saw the Mustangs firing on all cylinders to defeat Nipissing in straight sets with second-year middle Candice Scott adding ten kills and three solo blocks to help in the win.

Despite starting the year with six straight losses, the young team has rallied back in 2014 to show remarkable improvement and versatility, improving their record to 3-4 in the new year and taking down one of the top teams in the country. The Mustangs seem to be peaking at a time when every game is important and they will be looking for points heading into this week's matches.

Western at Waterloo - Friday, February 7 at 6:00 p.m. - Watch Live via the Warriors Webcast

The Mustangs will be looking for their third win in a row as they head into this week's matchup against the Waterloo Warriors, who are currently tied with the purple and white in fifth in the OUA West. The Waterloo squad, also 5-12 on the season, has one win over the Mustangs already under their belts from their early season 3-1 win at Alumni Hall and the purple and white will be looking for vengeance.

The Warriors will enter this week's contest after their 3-0 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves last week, a team that the Mustangs recently split their schedule with after their doubleheader weekend in Lakehead's home gym. The team will be looking to Madison Taylor, the Warriors leading scorer, to put them past the Western defence. Taylor has averaged 3.17 points per set this season and recorded a team-high of 10.5 points in the win against Lakehead.

Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday at Waterloo's Physical Activities Complex.

Western at Guelph - Saturday, February 8 at 6:00 p.m. - Watch Live via the Gryphons Webcast

The weekend action wraps up in Guelph as the Mustangs look to topple the 12-5 Guelph Gryphons from their position atop the West division. In the two teams' last matchup the Gryphons came out on top with a 3-1 victory despite a hard fight from the Mustangs. The Gryphons will now be looking to secure their place in first as they prepare to host the Mustangs.

The Gryphons are coming off of a 3-1 loss at the hands of the top team in the East, the McMaster Marauders, and will be looking to end their regular season with a win over the Mustangs as they prepare for playoffs. The team has a varied arsenal of offensive weapons, including Sophie Bukovec who comes in at number five on the OUA women's volleyball scoring leaderboard with 3.89 points per set.

Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at Guelph's W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre.
