GUELPH, Ont. - Ten points each from Eric Howard and Adam Maahs helped lead the Guelph Gryphons to a 34-6 win over the Western Mustangs men's rugby team on Friday night at Varsity Field.
Â
The loss gives the Mustangs a 1-1 regular season record, while the Gryphons move to 3-0 on the year.
Â
The first half began on a high note for the Mustangs with a successful penalty kick from
Mike Santangeli giving Western an early 3-0 lead. Â Guelph initially struggled to break through the purple and white defence who managed to hold the Gryphons at the goal line, however the Gryphons quickly regrouped to score a try and convert minutes later, beginning a scoring run that gave them a 19-3 lead heading into halftime.
Â
Despite another penalty goal from Santangeli in the second half that added an additional three points to the scoreboard for the Mustangs, the Gryphons picked up another 15 points off of two tries, a conversion, and a penalty goal to take the game 34-6.
Â
Santangeli, a native of Oakville, Ontario and a fourth-year science student, was the Mustangs top scorer with six points. Howard Maahs topped Guelph's score sheet with ten points each.
Â
The Mustangs are back in action at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 20th at Alumni Field when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks on Homecoming Weekend.
