Mustangs Softball remain undefeated with weekend sweep

LONDON, Ont. – Western softball defended their winning record in the 2014 season as they went undefeated in weekend play. The Mustangs faced off against the Ottawa GeeGee's Saturday, September 13, 2014 winning 3-0 then 17-3 in their second meeting of the day. The purple and white were back at it on Sunday to they defeat the Carleton Ravens by a respectful 8-0 and 10-0 to cap off the weekend.

As has become common in recent years between Ottawa and Western, the game featured excellent pitching and strong defence. Mustang senior ace Stacie Cox (London, ON) bettered Ottawa star Jean Cardona, allowing only two hits in a nine strikeout to earn a 3-0 Western victory in game one of the doubleheader. Cox also excelled at the plate, picking up two hits (including a triple) and scoring a run. Shortstop Brittany Hicks (Dundas, ON) contributed two hits (including a double) and scored twice for the Mustangs.

Later that afternoon, Freshman Rachael Jacques (Barrie, ON) delivered a four hit, one earned run, eight strikeout performance as Western completed the sweep over Ottawa with a dominating 20-hit, 17-3 victory. Freshman Emma Parno (Surry, BC) and Hicks had three hits apiece while Mel Smith (Kitchener, ON), Dani Lahti (Saskatoon, SK), Jenn Wakefield (St Thomas, ON), Tricia MacKay (Embro, ON) each contributed two hits, Cox added a double, and freshmen Courtney Reynolds (Vancouver, BC) and Amber Smolenaars (Hanover, ON) blasted triples.    

On Sunday, the Mustangs defeated Carleton with two run rule victories by scores of 8-0 and 10-0. In game one, Freshman Smolenaars went the distance in the circle allowing just two hits. Parno and Courtney Reynolds had two hits apiece and both Smolenaars and Riley Cunningham (Austin, TX) added RBI triples.

In game two against Carleton, Jacques continued her dominance in the circle, scattering four hits for the shutout win. At the plate, she contributed two hits, two RBI, and scored once. Also recording multi-hit games for Western were Smith, Mich Reynolds (Guelph, ON), and Jayme Wells (Stirling, ON). Rachelle Washkevich (Guelph, ON) and Robyn Wood (Guelph, ON) each hit doubles, Mich Reynolds scored three times, while Smolenaars scored and had two RBI. The wins improve the Mustangs record to 6-0.

Next action for the three time defending National Champion Mustangs is Friday, Sept 19 (5 p.m. and 7 p.m.) at Stronach Park in a Homecoming weekend doubleheader against the Waterloo Warriors, who were the 2013 Ontario Bronze medalists.
