This past weekend the Mustangs softball team travelled to St. Catharines and Hamilton to take on Brock and McMaster, respectively, outscoring their opponents 47-5 to come away with four big wins.
Saturday was a battle of the only undefeated teams remaining in 2014 Ontario University play and the visiting Mustangs left little doubt about who was better on this day, registering 13-1 and 8-1 wins over the Badgers.
In game one, Mustangs senior pitcher
Stacie Cox allowed just one hit and no earned runs. Offensive leaders for Western included
Shannon Davidson with three doubles and five RBI,
Brittany Hicks with a two-run home run, as well as
Jenn Wakefield,
Riley Cunningham, and Cox who each hit RBI doubles.
In game two against Brock, Freshman
Rachael Jacques struck out seven and gave up just three hits for the win. At the plate, Davidson hit a homerun, Hicks had two doubles, two RBI, and one run scored,
Tricia MacKay recorded one single, one double, two RBI, and two runs scored, Cox had two singles and one run scored, and Freshman
Jayme Wells one hit, one RBI, and one run scored.
On Sunday against McMaster, Cox pitched a no hitter, striking out nine in a 7-0 win. In the last inning,
Michelle Reynolds made a highlight reel diving catch in left centre for the first out, followed by a strikeout and ground ball out to
Robyn Wood at first base to preserve the no-no. Offensively, the Mustangs recorded 15 hits including four by Reynolds, three by
Mel Smith, and two each for Cox and Wakefield.
In game two with McMaster, the Mustangs scored 10 runs on nine hits in inning one en route to a 19-3 victory. Davidson led Western with four hits including a two RBI triple,
Dana Lahti had three singles, MacKay also recorded three hits including a three-run home run, while
Sam McMahon, Freshmen
Amber Smolenaars,
Emma Parno,
Courtney Reynolds, and Wells had two hits apiece. Smolenaars got the win in the circle. The wins improve the Mustangs 2014 season record to 10-0 and 29-0 going back to last season.
Next action is this weekend at home where the Mustangs will battle the Laurier Golden Hawks (8-2) for first place on Friday, September 26 at 5 & 7 p.m. and then on Saturday, September 27 at 2 & 4 p.m. versus Toronto Varsity Blues (6-2). Finally, on Sunday, September 28 at 11 a.m. & 1 p.m., the Guelph Gryphons (0-8) will provide the opposition on Senior Day. Come out and cheer on the Mustangs at Stronach Park in London, Ont., as they attempt to continue their winning streak.
