LONDON, Ont. - The Mustangs will play for their fifth consecutive Ontario Championship at home October 17-19 after improving their 2014 record to 16-0 this past weekend, recording pairs of wins against each of Laurier, Toronto, and Guelph to extend their winning streak to 35 games going back to last season.
On Friday, September 26 Western defeated the second place Laurier Golden Hawks by scores of 9-1 and 10-1. In game one, senior
Stacie Cox continued her dominance in the circle with seven strikeouts, zero earned run performance while
Mel Smith delivered a HR and
Shannon Davidson added two triples.
In game two, Freshman
Rachael Jacques kept the Golden Hawks under control pitching a three hitter while
Brittany Hicks hit a grand slam for the purple and white.
On Saturday, September 27 the Mustangs took two from Toronto by scores of 15-0 and 11-3 on Community League Softball Day. The future Mustangs in attendance ran onto the diamond during the game one introductions, enjoyed a number of between game contests for prizes supplied by Mustang Sponsor, Dominos Pizza, and witnessed some quality play on this day.
Cox pitched a one hitter and picked up a home run, three RBI, and scored three times to help her own cause. Freshman
Emma Parno and
Jenn Wakefield were both four-for-four at the plate and recorded three RBI apiece.
Michelle Reynolds was two for three with one RBI and three runs scored.
In the second game, Jacques scattered six hits and recorded nine strikeouts winning her sixth game against no losses. Hicks had four RBI,
Dana Lahti and Smith each added two RBI, while
Tricia MacKay hit a triple, scored twice, and had one RBI.
On Sunday, September 28 Western swept the Guelph Gryphons 15-0 and 12-0. Additionally, five seniors were recognized post-game for their of hard work and dedication to the team, as well the Mustang community.
In game one, Cox again gave up just one hit, raising her 2014 record to 7-0 and lowering her 2014 ERA to an extraordinary 0.184. The Mustangs had 15 hits with Davidson leading the way with a HR and six RBI. Other offensive stars for Western included Reynolds who was three-for-three and four runs scored, MacKay three-for-three and three RBI, and Cox with four RBI and three runs scored.
In game two, Freshman
Amber Smolenaars pitched a four hit shutout improving her record to 3-0 in Ontario University play. At the plate, Davidson hit a HR and Jacques,
Lauren Sovereign, and Lahti each drove in two runs.
In 16 games this season, the Mustangs have scored an impressive 166 runs while allowing only 15.
Next action for the Mustangs is Friday, October 3 at 6 and 8 p.m. versus the fourth place Waterloo in London at Stronach Park. Then, Western travels to York and Queen's for doubleheaders on Saturday October 4 at 2 and 4 p.m. and Sunday October 5 at 11a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

The Ontario Championship hosted by Western on October 17-19 will feature the top 8 Ontario schools at Stronach Park, so mark your calendars. As of September 28, this would include Western, Windsor, Laurier, Waterloo, Ottawa, Toronto, Brock, and McMaster but with 6-8 games still to play only Western has secured a spot.
