Mustangs keep momentum rolling with 4-0 victory over Waterloo

Box Score

WATERLOO, Ont. — Western netminder Tori Edgar topped off a strong effort from the Mustangs with a goal of her own, cashing in on a 90-yard, two-bounce shot to seal the deal on a 4-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday afternoon.

Tori's first-career goal came thanks in large part to pressure from Western's strikers and helped put the cherry on top of the Mustangs' third straight strong effort to open the season. Western is now 3-0-0 after kicking off the season with two home wins against Algoma on the weekend.

On the other side of the field, Amanda Boyle turned in another solid effort, potting her fifth and sixth goals of the season to give her the outright scoring lead in the OUA. Her first goal nine minutes in gave Western the only lead they would need in the game while her second marker, which came six minutes into the second, helped secure the win and keep the Mustangs unbeaten on the season.

Jess Friend had the other goal for the Mustangs in the first half, beating Warriors goalkeeper Lesia Bandura to put Western up by two heading into halftime. The Warriors, on the other hand, were unable to get the ball past Western backstop Edgar, who extended her shutout streak to 110 minutes with the clean sheet.

The second half saw much of the same from both teams, with Boyle adding her second goal of the night not far into the half and Edgar adding the other in the 67th minute. Meanwhile, Edgar continuing her dominance in net for Western, registering three saves after not seeing any shots in her 120 minutes of play over the weekend.

By the time the final seconds had ticked off the clock, the Mustangs had tripled Waterloo's shots on goal total, firing 11 on the Warriors' keepers while sending five more shots just wide. On the season, Western has out-shot their opponents 58-3 while outscoring them 34-0.

Next up for the Mustangs are the Laurier Golden Hawks at home on Saturday afternoon, followed by the Brock Badgers in St. Catherines on Sunday. Saturday's home game is set to kick off at 2 p.m. at TD Stadium as part of Western's Orientation Week festivities.
