Coming off an 80-70 win against Waterloo at home, the Mustangs women's basketball team hopes to keep the wins coming when they welcome the Ottawa Gee Gees and Carleton Ravens to Alumni Hall this weekend.
The win against the Warriors on January 17 saw career best numbers for both
Mackenzie Puklicz and
Caroline Wolynski, who put up 30 points and 20 points, respectively. While quieter than normal offensively for the last three games,
Maddy Horst has improved her performance on the glass, most recently coming away with 14 rebounds against the Warriors.
Head coach Brian Cheng said his team has been focusing more on defence in practice and hopes that by ensuring sound fundamentals, the squad will put up a challenge for this week's visitors.Â
"We rise to the occasion, and we sink to the level of training," he said. "We just need to do what we know, and do what we've been trained to do."
The Mustangs will need to ensure their training is sound on both sides of the court as they face one of the league's best offensive teams in the Ottawa Gee Gees and the defensively solid Carleton Ravens.
Ottawa vs. Western - Friday, January 23 at 6:00 p.m. Â Watch live on OUA.tvThe Gee Gees sit atop the OUA North Division with a record of 7-3 and are coming off a close a close 64-61 victory against Guelph on January 17.
A key figure in that win was Ottawa guard Krista van Slingerland, who scored 14 points including three free throws at the end of the fourth quarter to help stave off the Gryphons. Her 50.5% field goal percentage is fifth best in the OUA, and complements teammate Stephanie MacDonald's 16.2 points per game nicely.
Carleton vs. Western - Saturday, January 24 at 6:00 p.m. Â Watch live on OUA.tvSitting just behind Ottawa in the OUA North are the Carleton Ravens, who sit at 6-5 on the season. The Ravens most recently hosted Lakehead in a loss that saw their offense stunted to just 40 points. Despite the loss, it should be noted that the Ravens held Lakehead to just 52 points which should come as no surprise for a team that is second in the league in rebounds (43.5 per game), first in blocks (3.7 per game) and third in points allowed per game (56.1).
Caroline Wolynski and Mackenzie Puklicz should look to continue the strong defensive and offensive output shown in the January 17 match against Waterloo as they pair up against the Ravens' Lindsay Shotbolt, who leads the league in rebounds while averaging 13.1 points per game.
