Preview: Western faces top CIS teams in Ottawa and Carleton

The Mustangs face a challenging weekend as they take on the CIS No. 1 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night and CIS no. 2 Carleton Ravens on Saturday night, both at Alumni Hall. The Mustangs are currently on a four game winning streak, hoping to upset the top teams and keep their luck going.

It will be a weekend of excitement as the Mustangs currently sit in good position themselves, resting in first place in the OUA West Division standings with a record of 8-3. The Ottawa Gee-Gees top the CIS podium, taking first place in the OUA North Division standings by going undefeated this season at 11-0. Their neighbours, the Carleton Ravens follow right on their heels, only losing one game this season for a 10-1 record that puts them in second in the same standings.

Fourth year Mustang Greg Morrow still continues to lead the Western pack, extending his average points per game to 20.5. He topped the scoreboard with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists in their most recent victory against the Waterloo Warriors. Look out for Morrow and teammate Tom Figliano to lead the defence as they currently have team-high numbers of 7.2 and 5.5 rebounds per game, respectively. With some players coming back off the bench from injuries, the Mustangs are all ready to step on the court and fight their toughest opponents yet.

The Gee-Gees have been on a three-month long streak, going undefeated into Friday nights game against the Mustangs. Winning nearly every match by a gten point margin, the Gee-Gees team is one to be reckoned with.

Fifth-year Gee-Gee Johnny Berhanemeskel tops the team with 23.3 points per game, putting him third in the CIS Offence leaderboard for shooting. He also connects 88.7% of his free throw attempts and has racked in an average of 4.8 assists per game, making him one of the most watched players by his opponents and the audience. Three other plays also shoot a double digit average, making Ottawa's offence a threat to their opponents.

In his third year as a Gee-Gee, Caleb Agada sits in second with 17.3 points per game and sinks 45% of his attempts on the arc. He has hit double digits in every game but one this season and been a significant factor for his teams victories.

The Mustangs must make their defence a key factor in their play during their game while making sure not to send players to the free throw line, where more than half of the Gee-Gees are connecting at moew than 50% of their attempts.

Western vs. Carleton Ravens - Saturday, January 24 at 8 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv

The Ravens have been equally impressive this season as their university neighbours, sacrificing their only loss to the Gee-Gees to give their rivals the extra two points in the standings. The Ravens are now 10-1 going into the weekend sitting right behind the Gee-Gees in the CIS rankings and OUA North Division standings.

Philip and Thomas Scrubb exhibit their brotherly similarities by topping the Ravens with 18.4 and 18.3 points per game respectively. They have been an impressive duo through the season with Philip hitting an outstanding 95.8% success rate from the free throw line and Thomas topping the team with 6.9 rebounds per game.

The team has an overall success rate of 77.6% from the free throw line with the majority of the team hitting more than 60% individually. Cameron Smythe's 63.8% field goal success puts him on the top of the Raven leaderboard and puts him fifth in the leaderboard in CIS Offence leaders standings.

With both the Mustangs and the Ravens having extraordinary success from the three point line, Saturday night's matchup is looking like a game full of high scores and tough defence. The Mustangs must keep their eyes on the ball to hopefully add another 'W' to their record.
