NAPANEE, Ont. - Western jumped out to an early lead on Windsor and captured a 9-2 victory on Friday in the opening game of the Ontario Championship. The game was decided quickly as the Mustangs plated eight runs in the first three innings.
A solo home run by
Shannon Davidson and an RBI single by
Tara Cress during the first inning and an RBI triple by Davidson and an RBI single by
Robyn Wood in the second inning supplied the early offense for Western. Davidson later added an RBI triple.
Freshman, Jaymie Mailloux got the win for the Mustangs allowing only two runs over five innings. She struck out two, walked two and surrendered three hits. Brie Balzer took the loss for Windsor. She allowed nine runs in 4 1/3 innings, walked none and struck out one.
Windsor took an early lead, 2-0 in the first inning on a single by Mandy Johnstone, bringing home Marissa Thomson and Justine Cunningham who had both walked before Mailloux settled in.
Western added four more runs in the bottom of the third. A Cress triple got things going, plating
Holly Perry. That was followed up by
Michelle Reynolds' single, plating Cress and
Emma Parno. Reynolds ended the game in the fifth when she scored on a hard hit off the Lancers pitcher.
The Mustangs recorded 17 hits 4 of them for extra bases. Next action for Western is vs Queen's at 12:30pm Saturday and Toronto at 4:30pm Saturday. The playoffs go Sunday.
