NAPANEE, Ont. - The Mustangs charged to their sixth straight Ontario Championship in Napanee last weekend, dominating on the final day of competition to come away with their eighth trophy in the past 10 seasons.
Western entered day three of the Ontario Championship with a 3-0 tournament record awaiting the winner to emerge from the Brock versus Toronto quarterfinal matchup.Â
The Varsity Blues were victorious in a back and forth battle and were sky-high for their semi-final contest with the Mustangs, but on this day they were not ready for the onslaught that was to come. In the top of the first, the first three Varsity Blues were immediately retired while in the bottom of the inning Western brought 16 batters to the plate, recording seven hits and 11 runs.
Then, after a quick top of the second, the Mustangs picked up two more runs on two hits including a triple by
Shannon Davidson. In the third inning, all three Varisty Blues struck out again while the Mustangs recorded two more runs on two hits, a fielder's choice, and a wild pitch to complete the three inning run rule 15-0 win.Â
Freshman
Sara Contini picked up the no hit shutout victory which propelled the Mustangs into their 10th consecutive Ontario Championship game this time vs Laurier who had defeated Ottawa in the other semi-final. This Championship matchup would be a repeat of the two 2014 final game won by Western 7-0 in a 5 inning run rule victory.
History would repeat itself again this year as the Mustangs took down their neighbours by the same 7-0 score and again in a 5 inning run rule victory. Western scored three runs in the first, on a walk, a hit on error, a two RBI single by
Robyn Wood, and singles by
Tara Cress,
Riley Cunningham, and
Alana Cress. The Mustangs added a run in the second on an error and three more in the fourth on an RBI single by
Melanie Smith followed by a triple from Davidson and a two-run double by Cunningham.
Davidson got on base three times in the game for Western including a walk, a single, and her fourth inning triple. She was selected as the game MVP becoming the eighth Mustang to win the award in the ten years it has been awarded and the first to win it twice.
Sophomore pitcher
Rachael Jacques kept Laurier off the scoreboard for all five innings of the run rule shut out. She allowed only two hits and struck out three.
