Preview: Mustangs take on Windsor in hopes of extending win streak

The Mustangs opened up their 2015-16 season last week, going 2-0 against the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks. They head to Windsor to take on the Lancers on Friday night with the hopes to extend their winning streak.

Western currently sits in first place, tied with the Lancers in the OUA West Division Standings. The rest of the division is tied at zero points, with the three teams recording 0-2 for the beginning of the season.

Veterans MacKenzie Puclickz and Caroline Wolynski top the Mustang scoreboard with 18.5 and 18 points per game, respectively. Wolynski recorded the game-high 32 points in the contest against Laurier, with Puclickz adding 20 points of her own in their victory. Rookie Julia Curran follows her teammates scoring an average of 14 points per game to begin her first season in the OUA. Her strong scoring plays has made her one of the top rookies on the team, alongside Cassidy Crowe and Laura Graham, who both have 6.0 points per game in their rookie season.

Curran currently tops the Mustang defence with 6.5 rebounds per game, making her an all around key player on the court. Victoria Heine returns for her third season in purple and white, following Curran with 6 rebounds per game. Wolynski's tough defensive force was a key threat to their opponents on the weekend, as she now averages 6 steals per game and 4.5 assists. The Mustangs go into the weekend with a 76.9% success rate at the free throw line and 43.9% field goal success.

The Windsor women's basketball team comes into the new season after winning the OUA Championships against the Ryerson Rams, and the CIS Championships against the McGill Martlets last season. They opened their 2015-16 season with wins against the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors.

Cheyanne Roger leads the Lancer pack with 19 points per game and going 80% at the free throw line. Four Lancers follow with double digit points per game, with Andrea Kiss and Emily Prevost of the four with 14.5 points per game.

Roger leads the team in defence as well, with an average 12.5 points per game. Teammate and fourth year Lancer, Kiss, pairs well with Roger in defence with 8.5 rebounds per game. With the starting lineup making key plays around the basket and at the free throw line, the Mustangs must be able to match the quick pace and fast plays of the Lancers.

Both teams have similar success rates, with the Lancers hitting success rates of 73.8% from the free throw line and 42.8% in field goals. With the similarity in plays between the two, the stage is set for a thrilling and close matched game on Friday night.
