QUEBEC CITY – Six Western Mustangs football players have been selected as CIS All-Canadians as announced on Thursday evening during the Sun Life Financial All-Canadian Banquet presented by Mallette.
Offensive lineman
Sean Jamieson and defensive back
Jesse McNair both earned spots on the first team, while quarterback
Will Finch, running back
Alex Taylor, and offensive linemen
Eddie Meredith and
Matt Van Praet were all named to the second team.
Jamieson, who was also selected as a first team all-Canadian in 2014, was one of the anchors of a Mustangs offensive line that helped the purple and white become the highest scoring team in CIS regular season history, setting new milestones with 494 points and 64 touchdowns. McNair is an all-Canadian for the first time in his career after leading the Mustangs in tackles with 45 regular season stops, 39 of them solo, while also adding one interception.
Finch's 2015 campaign earned him his second OUA MVP award in three years, as well as second team all-Canadian selection. The Burlington, Ont., native led the Mustangs offence during their record breaking season, completing 69.5% of his passes, going 166 for 239 with 2,616 yards passing, 17 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also added another three majors on the ground and racked up 237 yards rushing on 33 carries.
Taylor joins the national all-star squad for the first time in his career after a breakout sophomore season. The running back was second among all CIS players in both rushing yards and touchdowns with 1,068 and 12 respectively. While those are certainly eye-popping numbers, perhaps the most impressive statistic is that he did it all on only 99 carries, averaging 133.5 yards per game and an astounding 10.8 yards per attempt.
Both Meredith and Van Praet join fellow lineman Jamieson on the all-Canadian list for their efforts on the Mustangs offence this season. Along with the CIS records in points and touchdowns, the Mustangs offence also established a new OUA mark for rushing yards in a season with 2,947, surpassing the previous record of 2,807 yards that Western set in 2003. This is Van Praet's first all-Canadian selection and the second for Meredith, who was also named to the first team in 2014.
Overall Western comes in at second place among all CIS teams with six all-Canadians this season, tied with the Laval Rouge et Or. The Calgary Dinos topped the list with 11 players named to the CIS all-star team, including nine on the first squad.
