WBB Stats vs Carleton and Ottawa - Nov. 27-28, 2015

Women's Basketball By Liana Timbol

Preview: Western heads on the road to face Carleton and Ottawa

Looking to bounce back from their first losses of the season, the Mustangs are on the road this week to face the Carleton Ravens on Friday night, before following up with a Saturday night tip-off against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

The Mustangs double losses this weekend bumped their record down to 3-2 and placing them in a tie for second place with the Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA West. They sit behind the Windsor Lancers who have a 4-1 record and two points ahead of them, although that one loss came courtesy of the purple and white back on November 13.

After scoring a game-high 36 points against Toronto on Sunday, Mackenzie Puklicz enters the week as the OUA's leading scoring with 20.8 points per game. Veteran Caroline Wolynski follows on the Mustangs leaderboard with 13.6 points per game. The high-scoring duo have alos been strong on the defensive end, grabbing 4.2 rebounds per contest with Wolynski recording three steals per game, while Puklicz has averaged two takeaways per outing.

Leading the way on the boards has been Victoria Heine, with 7.8 rebounds per game.

Carleton heads into Friday night's matchup in second place in the OUA North Division with a 3-2 record. They split their past two contests, defeating Algoma but following that up with a loss to Lakehead.

Junior forward Heather Lindsay leads the Ravens with 15.2 points per game, followed by Elizabeth Leblanc who has notched 11.3 points per game. Their defence has strong leaders such as Lindsay with 10.2 rebounds per game, making more than 10 catches off the glass in more than half their games played this season.

The team's shooting success has been a key factor in their victories this season. They shoot a successful 75.0 percent at the free throw line, meaning that the Mustangs can't afford to send the home side to the line often.

Western at Ottawa Gee Gees - Saturday, November 28 at 8 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv

The Ottawa Gee Gees sit in first place of the North Division with an undefeated 5-0 record.

Gee-Gee veteran Catherine Traer leads the pack with 19.6 points per game, making her the only Gee-Gee with a double digit average. Kellie Ring leads their defence with 5.7 rebounds per game and two assists.

Despite posting a perfect record so far, the Gee-Gees numbers don't stack up as well as the Mustangs in many categories. Although they've won by double digits in all but one of their games this season, a close 72-69 win over Guelph, the Gee-Gees trail the Mustangs in points-per-game, field goal percentage and free throw percentage, while boasting the exact same 34.3 three point success rate.
