WVB Stats vs Ottawa - Nov. 8, 2015

Women's Volleyball By Pam Bialik

Preview: Mustangs travel to Ottawa for matchup against the Gee-Gees

Currently the only undefeated team in the OUA West, the Mustangs will face one of their toughest tests of the 2015-16 season on Sunday, November 8, when they travel to Ottawa for a game against the Gee-Gees at Montpetit Hall.

The previous two purple and white wins have seen a Mustang contingent not only more consistent in their play, but also able to close out sets stronger and faster than they did last season.

Point leader of the first two games, Aja Gyimah has been integral to the recent success. Averaging 3.57 kills per set to land in the tenth spot on the CIS leaderboard, while tied for third nationally in aces per set (0.86) and sitting sixth in points per set (4.8), her presence on the floor can`t be ignored.

Close behind Gyimah is Kelsey Veltman with 3.8 points per set. Leading the team in blocking with 1.43 per set, the Brampton product has earned a third place slot among the CIS stats leaders. Further solidifying her dominance at the net is her .414 attack percentage, good for third place nationally.

One other Mustang appears on the national rankings, setter Katherine Tsiofas. Landing ninth in assists per set with an average of 9.57, she`s also proven to be a threat in the back row as she matches Gyimah`s 0.86 service aces per set to share third place.

Ottawa posts smaller representation on the CIS leaderboards, but they have been nothing short of dominant so far this season. Absorbing losses from the departure of their top two point leaders and starting libero, the Gee-Gees continue to thrive – having dropped only one of their 13 sets – and are already mirroring the 2014-15 season that resulted in a national 5th place finish.

As a team, Ottawa leads the OUA in both total kills and service aces.

Individually, Alix Durivage leads the garnet and grey scoresheet, picking up 50 points to average 3.8 per set. Also leading at the net is setter Kira Tome with nine blocks. With 10.38 assists per set, Tome holds down fourth place nationally.

London native Logan Potter will serve to challenge the Mustang serve reception, as she sits eighth nationally in service aces per set.

The only other Gee-Gee to be listed nationally is libero Sabrina Roy. With 4.77 digs per set, she is ranked sixth in Canada while holding down ninth in total digs with 62.

Sunday`s game in the nation's capitol is expected to begin at 2 p.m., and can be watch live on OUA.tv.
