Western continued to dominate on the pitch this past weekend, using a number of team efforts to shut down Laurier, Toronto, and Guelph.
With their six weekend wins, Western is now the only undefeated team in the league as they continue their quest for a fifth straight national title.
To start off the weekend, Western's
Rachael Jacques pitched a complete game shutout to carry the Mustangs to a 4-0 victory over Laurier in Waterloo, Ont. It was a dominant 12-strikeout performance for the sophomore, as she allowed just three hits. It was also an excellent game for Western's
Melanie Smith who went 3-4 and scored one run. She doubled in the sixth inning and singled in the first and seventh innings.
Western's winning run was scored by pinch runner
Holly Perry, who entered the game for catcher
Tara Cress. Perry stole both second and third before being driven in with a two strike, RBI single by freshman
Claire Linton. Western tacked on another three runs in the sixth inning when Smith led off with a double followed by a RBI triple from
Shannon Davidson. Robyn Woods then singled, bringing home Davidson, before Crane doubled to plate pinch-runner
Kristen Pearn.
On Friday evening in game two, the Mustangs (8-0) beat Laurier 9-1 in five innings after a five-run outburst in the fourth inning. Western scored in the fourth on an RBI single by
Lauren Sovereign, an RBI single by Reynolds, a groundout by Smith, an RBI single by Davidson, and an RBI single from
Riley Cunningham.
Reynolds finished 3-3 at the plate while Mailloux struck out three hitters on route to the run rule win. Mailloux allowed no earned runs on four hits and only one walk over five innings. Laurier scored first but the Mustangs evened the score with an RBI single by Davidson in the bottom of the first. In the third, the Mustangs scored three runs on a two-run home run by Wood and an RBI single by Smith and never trailed thereafter.
The following day, Western defeated the University of Toronto 4-2 in game one. Wood picked up three RBI on two hits for Western, a double in the first and a single in the third inning. Jacques struck out 11 Varsity Blues players, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits and one walk over seven innings. Western took a 2-0 lead in the first after Reynolds singled, moved to second on an error and scored along with Smith on a double by Wood. Reynolds and Sovereign scored on RBI singles by Wood and Perry in the third and fourth, respectively.
Later that day, Smith went 3-3 at the plate, sparking Western to a 6-1 victory in seven innings over the Toronto Varsity Blues in game two of the doubleheader in Toronto. She doubled in the first inning, homered in the third inning, and singled in the fourth inning. Sara Contini pitched the complete game win and allowed just one earned run, nine hits, and no walks while striking out five. Western took the lead in the second, scoring one run on a groundout by Wells and added two more runs in the bottom of the third when Smith homered and Cunningham tripled, scoring
Alana Cress. In the fourth, Western picked up three more runs on an Alana Cress single scoring Reynolds, a sac fly by Wood, and an RBI single by Cunningham.
Earlier in game one on Sunday, the Mustangs jumped out to a quick lead on Guelph and captured a 17-0 victory. After a big first inning, the Mustangs went on to scored three more runs in both the third and fourth innings. In the third, an RBI single by Freshman Perry plated Sovereign, a single by Woods scored
Jayme Wells, and a single by Cunningham drove in Perry. In the fourth, a single by Pearn scored
Emma Parno and a triple by Freshman,
Delaney Spencer scored both Pearn and Perry. Sovereign racked up three RBI on two hits for Western and Jacques got the run rule win without allowing a hit. It was her 18th consecutive win at Western. Brampton native, Linton, also pitched two scoreless innings for the Mustangs.
In game two on Sunday, shortstop Davidson recorded seven RBI on two homeruns and a single to lead the Mustangs to a 17-1 win in four innings over University of Guelph. Eleven runs in the first three innings helped Western defeat the Gryphons in this one. A Davidson homerun, RBI singles by both
Alex Crane and Tara Cress during the first inning as well as an RBI single by Davidson and a sacrifice fly by Crane in the second inning supplied the early offense for Western. The Mustangs scored six runs in the fourth including Davidson's second homerun, an RBI single by Tara Cress, and a 2 run single by Wells. Freshman Contini picked up the run rule win in the circle on three hits and no walks or runs in three innings while freshman, Jaymie Mailloux pitched the fourth.
