Box Score SAULT STE MARIE, Ont. – A pair of goals from defender
Sonja Cvetkovic and striker
Amanda Boyle led the offence as the Western Mustangs women's soccer team defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds 10-1 on Saturday afternoon at Superior Heights Field.
Â
The win is Western's third consecutive victory to start the season, and puts the Mustangs into a tie for first place in the OUA West Division with the Laurier Golden Hawks, who also boast a 3-0-0 record. Algoma's record falls to 0-3-0 on the year with the loss.
Â
Grace Grafham got the scoring started for the Mustangs in the 10th minute, giving Western a lead they would not relinquish. Cvetkovic's two goals marked number eight and nine for the Mustangs while Boyle struck in the 33rd and 63rd minutes to register her pair.Â
Â
Along with the pair of markers from Cvetkovic, six other Mustangs earned their way onto the scoresheet with
Paige Howard,
Tianna Deluzio,
Stefanie Di Tella,
Jess Friend,
Jivan Yacou, and
Julia Crnjac all finding the back of the Algoma net.
Â
Following Grafham's game opening goal Howard scored only three minutes later to give Western an early 2-0 lead. The scoring pace solowed down for the next few minutes until Boyle and Deluzio extended the Mustangs lead in the 33rd and 34th minutes respectively.
Â
Algoma's Cassandra Lethbridge answered back for the Thunderbirds after Deluzio's goal, cutting Western's lead to 4-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. Unfortunately for the host side that would be their only goal of the game as Di Tella and Friend added a goal each before the end of the first half, followed by a pair of goals from Cvetkovic, and one each from Boyle and Glibbery in the second to give Western the 10-1 win.
Â
Next up for the Mustangs is another contest with Algoma, with this one scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Superior Heights Field in Sault Ste. Marie. Â
