WBB Stats vs. Waterloo and Laurier - Jan 27 and 30, 2016

Women's Basketball By Kaitlin Jingco

Preview: Mustangs look to extend winning streak against Waterloo and Laurier

Finishing last week with tight wins over the Brock Badgers and McMaster Marauders, the Mustangs now have their sights set on Waterloo and Laurier with the hopes of lengthening their current winning streak from five to seven.

Last week's victories give the Mustangs an 8-3 record and allowed them to rise above the perennial powerhouse Windsor Lancers to the top of the OUA West.

Leading the way for the Mustangs recently has been Mackenzie Puklicz. As the second top scorer in the OUA, and the player whom the Mustangs have come to count on to sink game winning baskets, Puklicz averages 18.3 points per game. With 13.7 points, captain Caroline Wolynski is the only other Mustang to consistently score double digits.

On the defensive end, Julia Curran continues to shine in her first year as a Mustang, grabbing 7.7 rebounds a game. Third-year forward Victoria Heine follows closely behind Curran, with an average of 7.4 boards per game.

This week, the Mustangs look to continue their recent success. First, the Mustangs head to Waterloo to take on the Warriors who are currently three spots below the purple and white. Western finishes the week off at Alumni Hall on Saturday to face the Laurier Golden Hawks, who are currently two spots below the Mustangs in the OUA West Division.

Waterloo has been having a tough season, but last week's games may mark a turning point for the Warriors. Friday's two-point win against the Laurentian Voyageurs was the team's first win of the season, and they quickly followed it up with a second win against the Nipissing Lakers the next day.

The two wins give the Waterloo Warriors a 2-9 record, putting them in fourth place in the OUA West Division.

Kristen Osborne has made a big impact for the Warriors, averaging 12.8 points to put her at the top of the team's scoresheet. Adding 11 points of her own per game, point guard Emily Wilk is the only other player to consistently score double digits for the Warriors.

On the defensive end, Nicole Schlick leads the team in rebounds with a 5.8 average. Caitlin MacLeod is just .1 rebound behind Schlick, as she manages 5.7 per match.

After two wins up north in Sudbury and North Bay, the Warriors will attempt to bring their success back home against the Mustangs on Wednesday and secure their third win of the season.

Western vs. Laurier - Saturday, January 30 at 1 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv

The Laurier Golden Hawks enter this week in a similar fashion to the Waterloo Warriors, fresh off consecutive wins over Nipissing and Laurentian.

The Golden Hawks, who finished last year's OUA season with 34 points compared to Western's 14, have found themselves in the middle of the pack this year. Currently the Golden Hawks are in third place in the OUA West Division with their 12 points and 6-5 record. They fall behind second place Windsor and first place Western, both of whom are on this week's schedule.

With the graduation of last season's point leader in Whitney Ellenor, third-year guard Nicole Morrison has stepped up to fill the top spot and lead the team with 15.3 points per game. Kaitlyn Schenck has taken second position, scoring an average of 13 points.

For rebounds, Heather Payne and Alexandra Spadaro are the players to watch, grabbing an average of 6.6 and 6.3, respectively.

Overall, the Golden Hawks are only two points behind second place Windsor in the OUA West Division. They're top ten in the CIS for both free throws and three-pointers made per game, and if they can find the same success on shots from the floor, they could come out on top in their games against Windsor and Western this week.
