After wrapping up the first part of their regular season schedule in November the Mustangs return to the court this weekend with a Saturday evening contest on the road against the Guelph Gryphons.
They come back to the season after heading into the break after handing the Ottawa Gee-Gees their first loss of the season back on November 28 and sit in a tie for first place with the Windsor Lancers. Both Windsor and Western have a record of 4-3 for eight points in the OUA West Division Standings.
Mustang veteran Mackenzie Puclickz tops the scoresheet with 18.6 points per game, consistently hitting double digits including recording a season-high 36 points against Toronto on November 22.
Next up on the Mustangs scoring leaderboard are
Caroline Wolynski hitting 13.6 points and
Maddy Horst 10.3 points per game. The trio play a key part in the Mustang starting lineup, keeping their scores up early in the games.
Victoria Heine has been a leader on the defensive front, topping the team with 7 rebounds per game. Her season high of 10 boards came during Western's contest against the Toronto Varsity Blues. In her first year in the OUA,
Julia Curran has made waves on the court, following Heine with 6.2 grabs off the glass. She made a strong debut with 18 points in their opening game.
Overall the Mustangs are connecting on 41.8% of their shots from the floor with a majority of the team hitting over 40% in field goals, Western has enough high scoring players to help put themselves over the Gryphons this weekend.
Western at Guelph – Saturday, January 9 at 6 p.m.– Watch live on OUA.tv The Gryphons find themselves at a three way tie for first place in the OUA Central standings with a record of 5-2 and 10 points alongside the Brock Badgers and McMaster Marauders. Their only two losses have been at the hands of the Marauders and the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Three players hit double digit points per game, with Kate MacTavish leading the way with 16.1 per game. Dana Van Balkom follows with 14.3 and Bridget Atkinson with 10.1 points per game. Most of the team is over a 30% success rate in field goals, keeping the team's percentage at 37.9.
MacTavish leads the Gryphon defence with an impressive 9.3 rebounds per game, grabbing a little more than the Mustangs leader in Heine. Vanessa Rampado follows with 5.5 of her own and Barbara Inrig-Pieterse has 4.6 while Atkinson is next with 4.3. Their high rebounding players are a key threat to their opponents, as they capitalize on missed baskets to gain an advantage.
