Day Three Recap
INNERKIP, Ont. – The Western Mustangs are on top of the Ontario softball landscape once again, winning their seventh consecutive OIWFA Championship with a 4-0 win over the Brock Badgers on Sunday afternoon.
Western entered day three of the championship with a 3-0 record and a bye into Sunday's semi-finals. After dispatching the McMaster Marauders by a 9-4 score in the semi-finals, the purple and white didn't have long to rest before taking on the Badgers for the provincial title.
Rachael Jacques continued her fantastic season, earning the win after pitching another complete game shutout and striking out 11 batters with one hit allowed.
The Mustangs continued their theme of scoring early, plating their first runs of the game in a two run top of the second inning, when
Alana Cress scored on
Robyn Wood's groundout to second, followed by
Briar Balas coming in to score off
Emma Parno's RBI single.
The Badgers threatened to respond in the bottom half of the frame, when Laine Padovan led off with a single for Brock's only hit of the game, however she was stranded after two strikeouts and a flyout.
Courtney Reynolds and came across the plate in the third inning, while
Emma Murray scored in the fifth to give the Mustangs the 4-0 win.
Day Two Recap
INNERKIP, Ont. – The Western Mustangs went 2-0 on day two of the OIWFA Championship on Saturday to finish on top of their pool and earn a spot in the semi-finals set for Sunday afternoon.
Western took down both the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, with scores of 1-0 and 8-1 respectively.
The purple and white got their day started against Laurier in what turned out to be a defensive affair.
Holly Perry scored the game's lone run, coming around to score in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Rachael Jacques picked up the win for the Mustangs, throwing a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out 10.
After Saturday morning's low-scoring affair, the Mustangs didn't wait long to put points on the board against Waterloo, scoring two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
Western added three more runs in the third, with
Emma Murray,
Courtney Reynolds, and
Alana Cress all crossing the plate in the frame.
Waterloo responded with their first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning, however the Mustangs fired back with another three runs in the bottom half of the fifth.
Laura Chappel was the first Mustang to score in the inning, before a double from Reynolds plated both
Lauren Sovereign and
Holly Perry to end the game.
Sara Contini earned the win in the circle, allowing one unearned run, five hits, and one walk, along with four strikeouts.
The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the semi-finals, with the winner moving on to play for the OIWFA Championship at 3 p.m.
Day One Recap
INNERKIP, Ont. – A grand slam from
Emma Murray helped the Western Mustangs start off the OIWFA Provincial Championship with a win, defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees 11-1 in only five innings on Friday night.
Murray's homer was the last play of the game, scoring the Mustangs final four runs in the bottom of the fifth for the walk-off victory.
Western put their first points on the board in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs, with both
Briar Balas and
Robyn Wood coming around to score.
The Mustangs wouldn't wait long to extend that lead, putting four runs up in the third to take a 6-0 lead. Balas provided the highlight of the frame, hitting a triple that brought three runners around to score before crossing the plate herself courtesy of a single from
Lauren Sovereign.
Ottawa responded with their first run of the game in the top of the fourth, however Western fired back with one run of their own in the bottom of the inning with Murray scoring off of a single from Wood.
Western finished things off in the fifth inning, with Murray clearing the bases with a grand slam to put the purple and white up 11-1 to end the game.

The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow with two games on the docket. First up are the Laurier Golden Hawks at 10:45 a.m., with the Waterloo Warriors set to take on Western at 2:45 p.m.
