Mustangs top Voyageurs for second straight win

Box Score SUDBURY, Ont. - Fourth-year Guard Mackenzie Puklicz scored a team-high 24 points alongside six rebounds to help lead the Western Mustangs to a 72-64 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday evening at the Ben F. Avery Gymnasium.

With the win, the Mustangs are now tied for first place in the OUA West Division with a promising 2-0 start to the season. The loss will give the Voyageurs a loss to begin their year as they will look to bounce back from the 0-1 start.

After beginning her senior season by leading the Mustangs in scoring in their the win over Guelph last week, Puklicz did not show any signs of slowly down against the Voyageurs. The London native led all scorers in the game while going 4-for-6 on free throws to seal the fourth quarter comeback for the purple and white.

Second-year forward Julia Curran continued her dominance on the boards this year by collecting nine rebounds in the game while helping to spark the offence alongside Puklicz with 21 points of her own. Victoria Heine finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to give her the team's first double-double of the season.

Meghan Forestell was the highest scoring Voyageur of the evening, with 21 points, while L'Ashante Henry dominated on the boards with nine rebounds.

The game was a back and forth affair throughout all four quarters, with both teams tied at 17 after the first frame, before Western took a six-point lead at halftime. Laurentian outscored the Mustangs 17-12 in the third, setting up a final frame with Western up 50-49 entering the final 10 minutes.

Laurentian started off the fourth quarter strong, outscoring the Mustangs 11-4 in the first 3 and a half minutes to take a six-point lead with a little over six minutes remaining in the contest. Unfortunately for the home side, Western took control from there, outscoring their opponents 18-4 over the rest of the quarter, including five points each from Puklicz and Curran to secure the 72-64 win.

The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, November 12, when they travel to North Bay to take on the Nipissing Lakers. The game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. and fans can watch at OUA.tv.
