Mustangs look to extend winning streak to four games this Friday against Lakehead

After winning both matchups against Laurentian and Nipissing on the road this past week, the Western Mustangs will be heading into their third week of their season with a 3-0 record as they look to continue their success this week against the Lakehead Timberwolves.

Western heads into the weekend tied for first in the OUA West Division, with their 3-0 record matching both the Laurier Golden Hawks and Windsor Lancers in a three-way tie atop the standings.

Three games into the season, Mackenzie Puklicz not only leads the Mustangs in scoring, the fourth-year guard leads all U Sports players with 27.3 points per game, including a season-high 34 points in the Mustangs win over Nipssing on Saturday.

Julia Curran is next up on the Mustangs leaderboard with 16 points per game, and she also leads the team in rebounding with 8.7 per contest. Fellow forward Victoria Heine has averaged 7.7 boards through the first three games, while Puklicz sits in third place on the list with six per game.

Lakehead will come into their game against Western with a 1-2 record on the year and will be looking to move up to .500 with a win this week.

Lakehead has proven to be formidable at home so far this season, as they beat Algoma by double-digits in their first and only home game this year. However, the team will be looking to fix their shooting woes before their matchups this week, as they are shooting just 43% from the free throw line and 26% from three-point range to start the year. Western, who is top ten in the CIS in rebounding margin, will hope to take advantage of their size down low while Puklicz will no doubt be looking to keep up her scoring success from this weekend.

The key to the game for the Timberwolves will be to take care of the basketball, as the team is averaging 22 turnovers per game. Western's Laura Graham, who has become the team's best on-ball defender, will look to take advantage of the turnovers with a strong presence all game.
