KINGSTON, Ont. – A try from Queen's Dylan Young with two seconds remaining on the clock brought the purple and white campaign for a banner to an end, as the Gaels topped Western 28-24 Saturday afternoon at Nixon Field.
The Mustangs now move to the bronze medal round, where they'll take on either the McMaster Marauders on Sunday, November 13, at Western's Alumni Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Cole Sopik led the Mustangs in points, recording two tries for ten points, while
Glen Thomson-Bullock pitched in five points of his own.
Mark Denton was the only other Mustang to break onto the scoresheet, recording nine points from converts and penalty goals.
Not unlike the regular season matchup between the long-time rivals, the semi-final game saw a number of penalties laid against each team. However, it was Queen's penalties that gave the Mustangs their first points of the game.
Denton made sure Western was first on the scoreboard with a well placed penalty kick, but the lead would only last six minutes as Queen's secured the first major of the game minutes later.
The Mustangs continued to trail, despite Sopik breaking out and cutting through the Gaels to find the in-goal area. Thomson-Bullock was next on the board, bringing the Mustangs into the lead for the first time since their initial three-point kick.
Western and Queen's wrestled for dominance, with neither team able to consistently out-perform the other. The lead would flip back and forth a few times before the end of the game, with the final minutes played within a few metres of the Mustangs in-goal area.
It was only in the final seconds of the game that Western broke and allowed Young to score the final try of the game. With the convert, Queen's took the win by a narrow four-point margin at 28-24.
Western returns to the field next weekend, for a bronze medal matchup with the Marauders. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Alumni Field.
