The Western women's basketball team was unstoppable in January, earning victories in all six of their games. Now with seven consecutive wins, the purple and white currently hold the biggest winning streak in the OUA, and keep the team at the top of the West Division with a 10-3 record.
At the forefront of the team's success is
Mackenzie Puklicz. Known for her hustle on the floor, she leads the OUA with 19.4 points per game.
Caroline Wolynski, who is ninth in the CIS for assists, is the Mustangs' second top scorer, averaging 13.6. Second-year
Maddy Horst also now averages double digits with 11.2 points per game.
Rookie
Julia Curran continues to lead the Mustangs in rebounds, averaging 4.3 offensive and 4.2 defensive rebounds. Grabbing 47 rebounds at her opponents' basket so far this season, she is 12th place in the CIS for offensive rebounds.
Victoria Heine is another asset for the Mustangs at the glass, grabbing 2.7 offensive and 4.7 defensive rebounds per game.
Western vs. Nipissing - Friday, February 5 at 6 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tvComing off five losses in a row, the Nipissing Lakers have been struggling to find wins this season. Overall, the Lakers have registered two wins in 12 games so far, leaving them at the bottom of the OUA North, with their two wins coming over Algoma and York.
Yukon's Claire Abbott leads Nipissing on the scoreboard, averaging 14.9 points per match. Following behind her is Jamie Soffer, who secures 7.5 points on average.
Soffer is not only key for the Lakers' offensively, but also defensively. With 3.6 defensive rebounds per game, she falls behind only freshman Alexe Galipeau-Wilson's 4.7 average.
After six consecutive home games, five of which were losses, the Lakers will see if playing on the road will be the change of pace they need to secure a win.
Western vs. Laurentian - Saturday, February 6 at 6 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tvThe Laurentian Voyageurs came extremely close to ending their losing streak last Saturday. Facing the Toronto Varsity Blues, the Voyageurs turned to five minutes of overtime to determine the winner, but it was Toronto who came out victorious with a tight 60-59 score.
Saturday's loss was the team's fourth in a row, and keeps them in third place in the North with a 3-9 record.
After earning 23 points against the Varsity Blues, 5'5'' Voyageur Danielle Harris is the top scorer for Laurentian, contributing 15.6 points per match. Following closely behind her is Adrienne Moreau, who scores an average of 15.1 points per game.
Moreau, a master's student from Midhurst, Ontario, also leads the team defensively. She achieves the highest amount of rebounds and steals, averaging 4.2 and 2.4, respectively. L'Ashante Henry is second in defence, recording 3.9 rebounds at the Voyageur net and 1.5 steals.
After narrowly missing out on a win last weekend, the Voyageurs will be fired up and can be expected to hit the court hard.
