LONDON, Ont. - The Mustangs kicked off their campaign for the seventh straight Ontario Championship by capturing six wins in their opening weekend in double headers with Laurier, Carleton, and Ottawa.
Friday's first matchup against Laurier saw junior pitcher Rae Jacques strike out 16 and allow zero earned runs to help the Mustangs to a 5-1 victory. Offensively,
Kendra Dawson went 3 for 3 on two singles and a triple with one RBI, while
Robyn Wood and
Alana Cress added two RBIs for Western.
Â
Sara Contini dominated at the plate in the second game of the day, scattering five hits to help the Mustangs to a 9-1 victory. Also making an impression on the Golden Hawks were
Jayme Wells and
Kristen Pearn who both recorded home runs.
Saturday's contests against Carleton saw even more dominant Mustangs victories than the previous day, winning the first 10-0 and the second 8-0.
Game one again saw Jacques help secure a purple and white victory, while
Courtney Reynolds and
Briar Balas recorded two hits each. Balas also recorded three RBIs to push the Mustangs even further ahead.
The following game saw
Laura Chappel go the distance in the circle, allowing just two hits. Offensively, Chappel, Reynolds, and Pearn each recorded two hits while
Emma Parno picked up two RBIs.
The Ottawa Gee-Gees were in town on Sunday and strong weekend purple and white streak continued with another two wins. They first topped the Gee-Gees 7-0, but followed it up with an even more impressive 15-0 victory.
The first game saw Contini pitch a one hitter, while
Holly Perry led the team from the plate with three hits and three RBIs.
Game two saw the return of Jacques, who pitched a no-hitter by striking out seven Gee-Gees. The same can't be said for Ottawa's pitcher, as the Mustangs pounded out 20 hits. Leading the team was Balas, who recorded four hits and six RBIs – including a grand slam. Parno added a solo home run in the fourth.
Next action for the Mustangs is Friday, September 16 vs Waterloo at Stronach Park, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
