LONDON, Ont. - The Mustangs remained undefeated this week when they added another five wins to their season record. Currently sitting at 11-0, the team has scored 86 runs while allowing only seven.
On Friday night the Mustangs took two from Waterloo at Stronach Park, first defeating the Warriors 5-0 and following up with a second victory by a score of 11-3.
Game one saw Rae Jacques strike out 11 hitters for a shutout victory, while
Alana Cress,
Courtney Reynolds,
Kristen Pearn and
Briar Balas impressed from the plate. Cress had two hits and two RBIs, with Reynolds and Pearn adding one RBI each. Meanwhile, Balas picked up two hits.
The second contest saw
Laura Chappel take over in the circle for a five inning run rule victory, allowing just three hits and one earned run. Offensively, Balas continued to shine as she pounded out three hits with three RBIs, three runs, and a triple. Pearn added 3 hits and scored twice, while
Robyn Wood and
Emma Murray both recorded a double and a single. Wood also contributed three RBIs, while Murray picked up two.
Saturday saw a meeting of the only two undefeated teams left in Ontario university softball, with Western taking on the McMaster Marauders. Just as they have all season long, the Mustangs came out on top after topping the Marauders 4-1 after five innings.
Sara Contini battled the Marauders from the circle to strike out six. Offensively,
Kendra Dawson had two singles and one RBI, while
Emma Parno, Wood and
Holly Perry drove in one run each. Scoring the runs were
Rebecca Lansley,
Jayme Wells, Wood, and Balas.
While the Mustangs had no problem handling the Marauders, the weather turned out to be the one challenge they couldn't overcome. Rain shortened the first game to just five innings, while the second matchup of the series was rescheduled. Â
The Mustangs were back on the diamond on Sunday to take down Brock 4-0, and 8-1.
The first game saw Rae Jacques pitch a one-hitter, striking out 11 badgers throughout the afternoon. Offensively, Reynolds scored twice while Wells and Cress each pitched in an RBI.
Not to be outdone, Contini pitched a no-hitter in game two. At the plate, Parno and
Riley Cunningham had two hits and 2 and 3 RBIs respectively. Reynolds added a double, and scored twice.
This week will see the Mustangs play away from their home diamond, first travelling down to Windsor to take on the Lancers on Thursday, September 22. Game one is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., with game two to follow at 9 p.m.
Over the weekend, Western will bring some purple and white to Kingston as the Mustangs are scheduled to play the Queen's Gaels on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The team will close out the weekend on Sunday with a doubleheader against York in Toronto, set to begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
