Mustangs set for road matchups with Lions and Gaels

11/23/2017 3:43:00 PM

The Mustangs will be back on the road this weekend against the York Lions and the Queen's Gaels as they look to finish off their four-game road trip with a pair of wins before returning back home to Alumni Hall.

The purple and white are currently riding a three-game losing streak after a pair of losses this past weekend against the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens, as they sit seventh in the OUA West Division with a 3-4 record on the season.

This past Friday saw the Mustangs fall in a 52-39 matchup to the Ottawa Gee-Gees despite the double-double performance of Mackenzie Puklicz, putting up 14 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Despite the strong performance from Western's veteran guard, the Gee-Gees energy was simply too much for the Mustangs to handle, as Ottawa found success crashing the offensive boards and earned themselves second-chance opportunities. The high-effort play from the Gee-Gees would ultimately earn them the 13-point victory and redemption for last year's playoff loss to the purple and white.

The following night would be a similar story for the Mustangs against one of the OUA's elite teams in the Carleton Ravens. Carleton's defence hounded Western throughout the game, as the Mustangs gave up 19 turnovers on the night while allowing the Ravens to shoot 40% from beyond the arc. The defensive prowess by the 7-0 Ravens would be too much for the purple and white to overcome, as Western fell 71-48 in their third straight loss.

Western at York– Friday, November 24 at 6:00 p.m. - Watch live at OUA.tv

Western will be looking to bounce back after a pair of losses this past weekend, as they will face the York Lions, as both teams sit at 3-4 on the year. The Lions currently hold third place in the OUA East division, as they will come into Friday's matchup riding a three-game winning streak, their most-recent victory coming against the Waterloo Warriors in a 22-point win.

Despite the winning streak, York has struggled to score on the offensive end of the floor, connecting on just 20.9% of their three-point attempts this year. Scoring in general has proven to be a weak-point for the Lions so far this season, putting up 62.9 points per game on just 36% shooting from the field. However, despite the stagnant offence, the Lions' defence has carried them during this three-game winning streak. The team is currently ranked first in the country in steals per game, averaging an incredible 17.1 per contest while ranking third in blocks, averaging 4.4 per game. This York defence will no doubt post a challenge to a Western team which has struggled to find consistent offence so far this season.

The Lions will be led by senior forward Lindsay Shotbolt who is averaging 17.1 points per game on an efficient 56.1% from the field. Shotbolt has proven to be a dominant force to start the season, averaging a double-double with 10.6 rebounds per game to go along with 3 steals and 1.6 blocks per game. If the Mustangs hope to contain the Lions' offence, the first point of emphasis will be shutting down Shotbolt in the post.

Western at Queen's– Saturday, November 25 at 6:00 p.m. - Watch live at OUA.tv

The Mustangs will follow up their game against the Lions by heading down to Kingston for a meeting with the Gaels. Queen's has had yet another promising season early in the year, as they currently hold a 5-1 record and sit second in the OUA East division. Queen's will come into Saturday's matchup following a two-point loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks this past weekend on the road, as they will be looking to bounce back against the purple and white. Queen's got the best of Western in their only meeting last season, defeating the Mustangs by a 69-49 margin.

Queen's will come into Saturday's game with a strong offensive identity. The team has struggled shooting from deep so far this season, but has limited their attempts and have had success penetrating the paint and scoring at the rim. Despite their struggles from long-range, the Gaels have made their mark in other statistical areas throughout the year, ranking in the top ten in the country in rebounding, assists, turnovers, steals, blocks, and opponents' points per game. Throughout the start of the season, Queen's has forced opponents to focus on containing all facets of the game, something Western will hope to do this weekend.

The Gaels will be led by third-year Veronika Lavergne, who is averaging 16 points per game to go along with 7.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. Lavergne will be backed up by Andrea Priamo and Marianne Alarie, who have each racked up 12.7 and 12.0 points per game, respectively. The Gaels will enter Saturday with head coach Dave Wilson at the helm. Wilson will be entering his 36th season as the head coach of Queen's. Last season, Wilson guided a talented Gaels squad to an OUA quarterfinal match, as the team continues to boast one of the most consistent coach staffs in the province.
