Mustangs take on Lancers Friday night at Alumni Hall

11/9/2017 5:31:00 PM

The Mustangs will have one final home game in Alumni Hall this Friday, November 10 against the Windsor Lancers before heading back on the road for a four-game road trip. Western will be looking to continue their momentum from a pair of wins this past weekend over Toronto and Ryerson.

The purple and white are currently riding a three-game winning streak and hold a 3-1 record early in the season, good enough for second in the OUA West division.

This past Friday saw the Mustangs win in an overtime thriller against the Toronto Varsity Blues behind the late-game heroics of Mackenzie Puklicz. The Mustangs started off strong coming out of the gate, running the fast break to perfection and earning an early lead. But turnovers throughout the entire game kept the Blues within reach towards the end of the fourth quarter. Strong execution by both offences towards the end of the fourth would ultimately deadlock the game at 49-49 to end the quarter, forcing an overtime. The sharpshooting of Toronto's guards would exploit the Mustangs' defence in overtime, but a clutch layup from Puklicz would ultimately give the Mustangs the 60-59 victory in an overtime thriller.

The Mustangs would have little time to celebrate their last-second victory, as they faced Ryerson the following night in their second night of a back-to-back. However, the Mustangs showed no signs of fatigue from their previous matchup, as the defence fueled the offence for the purple and white, creating turnovers and sparking the fast break, just as it did against Toronto. But once again, turnovers allowed Ryerson to stay in the game and nearly take the lead heading into the final quarter. Despite the turnovers throughout the third quarter, the Mustangs dominated on both ends of the floor in the fourth, allowing the purple and white to extend their lead and cruise to a 66-55 win.

Western vs. Windsor – Friday, November 10 at 6:00 p.m.

Despite two impressive back-to-back wins for the purple and white, Friday's matchup against the Lancers will be a true test for the purple and white, as Windsor will come into Alumni Hall boasting one of the strongest offensives the OUA has to offer. Windsor currently sits atop the OUA West division, one spot above Western, as they hold a 3-0 record early in the season. Windsor got the best of Western in both of their matchups last season, sweeping the season series. However, the Mustangs will come into this year's matchup with a new identity, boasting one of the most formidable defences in the province.

On the other hand, Windsor will come into Friday's game with the same identity as they had last season; they remain one of the strongest long-range shooting threats in the country. As good as they were last season from beyond the arc, the Lancers have proven to be even more potent this season, hitting 10 threes a game while shooting 50% from long range in their first three games. That shooting percentage is unsustainable for an entire season, but the sheer volume of threes being made will put pressure on the Mustang guards throughout the entire game.

The Mustangs had relatively tight games against both Toronto and Ryerson, but Windsor earned wins over both the Blues and the Rams by an average of 21.5 points each game. Western has already surprised teams with their strong start to the year, but will have to continue their strong defensive performances and take care of the basketball if they hope to take down an OUA powerhouse in Windsor.

The Lancers will be led by forward Emily Prevost. Prevost led the Lancers in scoring last season with 14.5 PPG and has increased her production this season, putting up 17 PPG along with 7.7 RPG to lead the team. Carly Steer, who was also one of the Lancers' most trusted scorers last season, is once again helping Prevost carrying the scoring load with 16.3 PPG along with Jordan Gutt who is averaging 15 PPG and 6 RPG through three games.
