Western hosts Brock and McMaster in key matchups to finish the regular season

After splitting their games with the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks last week, the Mustangs will wrap up the regular season with a pair of home games against Brock and McMaster this week at Alumni Hall.

Western started things off last week with a strong performance against the Warriors. The Mustangs came out with intensity from the opening tipoff and cruised to a 13-point victory behind Mackenzie Puklicz's 23-point performance.

The Mustangs travelled to Waterloo to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks the following Saturday, hoping to cement their postseason positioning. Despite an incredible career-high 28 points from Julia Curran, the Mustangs were unable to put a stop to the strong shooting of the Golden Hawks as the Mustangs fell 72-59.

Now with two games left on the schedule the Mustangs are sitting as the 11th ranked team for the OUA playoffs. The purple and white will look to lock down that spot or move up in the rankings as they welcome the Badgers and Marauders to Alumni Hall.

The Brock Badgers will come into their game against the Mustangs as somewhat of an unknown entity as Western has not played the Badgers since their late-October exhibition matchup. Brock holds an 8-9 record on the year and boasts impressive wins over Lakehead and Laurier, and they currently ride a four-game win streak.

The Badgers have been one of the nation's best defensive teams on the perimeter, as they rank fifth in opponents' three-point percentage and held the Golden Hawks to 25% shooting from beyond the arc in their recent game.

However, despite the strong defence on the outside, Brock has had difficulties stopping opponents from scoring inside this season. This will no doubt be good news for Curran, who has scored dominantly in the paint all season.

Brock's roster boasts the OUA's leading scorer in Kira Cornelissen, who is averaging a double-double with 20.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. However, the forward has been sidelined since January 21. Cornelissen has not been alone in fueling the Badgers offence this season, as guards Bridget Atkinson and Melissa Tatti are contributing double-figure points with 15.4 and 13.1 points per game.

The Badgers are led by head coach Ashley MacSporran. MacSporran is in her first year coaching this Brock team after spending the 2015-16 season as an assistant with the OUA bronze medalist Windsor Lancers and learning from five-time National Champion coach Chantal Vallee.

The McMaster Marauders will travel to Alumni Hall this Saturday to face the Mustangs in their first meeting of the season. The Marauders have been dominant this season with a 15-2 record, including an impressive 19-point win over Ottawa back on December 2. Like Brock, McMaster is currently in the midst of a four-game win streak and will take on the Windsor Lancers on Wednesday prior to facing the Mustangs.

Across the board, McMaster is no doubt one of the most dangerous teams in U SPORTS. The Marauders lead the nation in points per game, field goal percentage, three-pointers made, and assists per game. Their offence is consistently productive and their defence has proven to be dependable. The Western defence will have to have one of their strongest showing of the season in order to slow down a McMaster offence which has been unstoppable thus far due to consistent shooting and unselfish ball-movement.

The Marauders scoring has been spread throughout the roster during the course of the season, as four players currently score in double-digits for McMaster. Fifth-year guard Danielle Boiago has led the team in scoring this season, averaging 19.4 points per game while adding 7.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game to help the Marauder cause.
