Western men's rugby vs. Queen's

MUSTANGS FALL TO GAELS IN FIRST MEETING OF THE SEASON

10/13/2018 6:02:00 PM

LONDON, Ont. - Second-year Samuel Kahn earned one try to lead the Mustangs in a 60-15 loss to the Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon on Alumni Field.

With the loss, the Mustangs fall to 6-4-3 on the season and will remain in fourth place in the OUA West division standings. The Gaels' victory improves their record to 7-5-1 on the season as they remain in fourth place in a competitive OUA East division.

"Our goals are to build phases, minimize mistakes, and keep it simple when we're going against such a competitive team like Queen's," said Mustangs head coach Tom Dolezel. "We were playing a really quality Queen's team full of veterans, so, as such a young team having to go against that, I think this was some of the best rugby we played all year."

"Obviously it's not the result we wanted, but a lot of the guys gained great experience, we played really good defensively, and we gelled as a team," said Kahn. "It was definitely some of the best rugby I've seen us play. I feel like we play to the level of our opponents, so we want to carry this play into next week."

Queen's struck early against Western to begin the match, earning three early tries to give themselves a 15-0 lead early in the half. However, Kahn put the Mustangs on the scoreboard with a try of his own to cut the Gael lead to just 15-7. Queen's continued to build their lead into halftime, heading into the second half with a 27-10 lead.

Queen's quickly added two more tries to their total, but a good run from Murphy cut the deficit to 39-15 midway through the half. The Gaels would go on one final scoring run late in the half against an exhausted Mustangs roster as they left with a 78-10 victory on the day.

"Coming off the energy that we had all game, I think we're going to carry it through this week and we're honestly expecting to blow out Trent next game," said Kahn. "It's a huge game for us. We're hoping to just run them to the ground, but we'll be giving them the same preparation that we gave Queen's."

"The guys are buzzing with excitement right now," said Dolozel. "They're happy and they're already wanting to get onto the next game. They're happy with their performance, I'm happy with their performance, so they're ready to go."

Western will be back in action next Saturday, October 12, where they will host Trent for their first meeting of the season on Alumni Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 P.M. EST.
