MUSTANGS RETURN HOME AGAINST GAELS IN OUA FINAL FOUR

10/29/2018 4:30:00 PM

LONDON, Ont. - The Western women's soccer team will be returning home to Mustangs Field to take on the Queen's Gaels in the OUA semifinals following an upset win over the York Lions this past weekend.

Western punched their ticket to the OUA Final Four with the 3-2 victory over the Lions on the road, as Katrina Giantsopolous once again came in clutch for the purple and white, scoring a pair of goals to lead Western in the win. York came into Sunday's matchup with the upper hand, entering as the No. 2 seed in the OUA West division and beating Western 5-2 in their final regular season game. However, following a hard-fought overtime win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday, Western entered Sunday with their confidence refueled as they took down the Lions in regulation.

The Mustangs will now move on to match up against a Gaels team who finished second in the OUA East division with an 8-3-5 record. Both teams will be heading into Friday with some déjà vu after facing one another in last year's OUA semifinals, with Western escaping with the 1-0 victory. However, after losing a number of senior players last season, Western will be entering this year's semifinals with a number of new faces in the starting lineup.

The Gaels will head into Friday's matchup following a decisive 5-1 win over the Nipissing Lakers to cruise to the OUA Final Four, with striker Jenny Wolever once again carrying the team with three goals on the day.

The Western defence will have to home in on Wolever if they hope to come out on top this Friday, as she finished second in the OUA in goals, third in assists, and first in shots throughout the regular season. The Mustangs have boasted one of the OUA's best defences all year, sitting third in the province in shutouts, but this Friday will prove to be one of their greatest tests of the season against a Gaels team who has been consistent in their scoring all year long.

The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 P.M. EST on Mustangs Field and fans can catch the action live on OUA.tv.
