Mustangs wrap up regular season against Brock and Guelph

2/13/2018 5:20:00 PM

The Mustangs will be back in Alumni Hall for their final home game of the regular season against the Brock Badgers before returning to the road for their final game against the Guelph Gryphons.

After splitting a pair of road games this past week, blowing out the Laurier Golden Hawks before falling to the now 18-4 McMaster Marauders, the Mustangs hold a 12-10 regular season record with two games remaining on the schedule. Western will be looking to pull ahead of the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA West divisional standings as both teams fight for fourth place and home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Golden Hawks hung around the purple and white through the entire first half, holding Western to just 27 percent shooting from the field through the first two frames. However, a dominant 28-4 run for the Mustangs, spearheaded by a 22-point performance from Maddy Horst, would give Western the separation they needed to run away with it in the second half on route to a 65-48 victory.

The following Saturday was a much different challenge for the Mustangs as they went up against one of the OUA's elite in the McMaster Marauders. Western was dominant on the boards and held McMaster at bay from beyond the arc, a difficult task against a team whose scoring can heat up without warning. However, McMaster did just that in the second half, knocking down long range shots with regularity while holding the purple and white to just 30 percent shooting from the field in the game as Western ended their road trip with a 66-44 victory.

The Mustangs will be matching up with the Brock Badgers for the second and final time of the regular season in their Senior Day matchup in Alumni Hall. Both teams have come a long way since their previous meeting against one another, as Western will be seeing Brock for the first time since their first game of the regular season on October 25 where the Mustangs fell 62-53 in a back and forth affair.

The Mustangs struggled to take care of the ball all night against the scrappy defence of the Badgers, as Western gave up an incredible 24 turnovers on the night, allowing Brock to pull away with a fourth quarter run.

However, it's been a difficult season since that initial win for the Badgers nearing the end of the season, as they currently hold a 6-16 record and occupy seventh place in the OUA West division.

The Badgers are currently riding a four-game losing skid while having one of the least efficient offences in the nation.

Brock has struggled to shoot the basketball with consistency, scoring 54.8 points per game on 31.9 percent shooting from the field. However, just as it was against the Mustangs, it's been the defence which has led the Badgers to their six wins this season, as the team has held opponents to just 34.2 percent shooting from the field, something which will prove to be a challenge against a Mustang team which has struggled scoring as of late.

Brock will be led by Kristen Gallant who is averaging a team-high 13.1 points per game to go along with 5.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game for the Badgers. Forward Courtney McPherson will be helping to lock down the paint against the purple and white, as she's averaging a near-double-double with 8.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game on the season.

Western at Guelph – Saturday, February 17 at 1:00 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv

The Mustangs will be heading into Guelph this Saturday for their second and final meeting against the Gryphons this season.

The game will likely have heavy playoff implications with Guelph and Western currently battling for fourth place in the OUA West standings, a position which offers home-court advantage in the first round of the postseason. The Mustangs currently hold the tiebreaker over the Gryphons, as Western came out with a 64-58 victory in their previous meeting.

It was a balanced scoring effort from the purple and white in the win, with Mackenzie Puklicz leading the way with 18 points, while Western's defence found a way to slow down Guelph in the fourth quarter to mount the comeback and earn the Mustangs the victory.

The offence has been about average for the Gryphons this season, sitting in the middle of the pack in terms of scoring put playing at a high-speed pace throughout the season, a pace which threw off the Mustangs in their previous matchup.

However, Guelph's average offence has been complimented by their tenacious defence, as the Gryphons sit seventh in the country in both blocks and steals while allowing opponents to shoot just 37.7 percent from the field and 27.5 percent from beyond the arc. Western's best bet will be to once again get the Gryphons in foul trouble, as the team's aggressive defence often leads to an abundance of foul calls against them.

Guelph will be led Burke Bechard and Sarah Holmes, who are averaging 11 and 10.8 points per game, respectively. Bechard torched the Mustangs in their previous meeting, putting up a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double in the loss. Holmes didn't play in their first matchup, but has been strong all season, averaging 6.5 rebounds to go along with her point production.
